    Medical Officer

    PURPOSE:

    The Health Systems Trust (HST) wishes to appoint two (2) Research Medical Officers for the Tuberculosis Reduction through Expanded Antiretroviral Treatment and Screening for Active TB (TREATS) study to be based in Cape Town.

    The positions will be based in the following communities: Idas Valley and Cloetesville (Stellenbosch), Ikhwezi (Strand), Bloekombos (Kraaifontein), Wellington, Delft South (Delft) and Dalevale (Paarl) to support a range of research activities.

    These are short-term (5-month) fixed-term contract positions commencing end-August 2020.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Perform clinical activities related to the study including clinical assessments, specimen and sputum collection, oversight of the safety of study participants and determination of clinical eligibility;
    • Conduct clinical interviews and administer study questionnaires;
    • Report, follow up, assess and manage adverse events;
    • Complete all required study-related documentation according to the study protocol, SOP and GCP requirements;
    • Referral of eligible participants for further treatment at the local health facility;
    • Reading and interpreting chest x-rays; and
    • General set-up and take-down of equipment and structures at sites.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    Qualifications and Experience

    • MBChB degree with at least 1-year post-community service experience;
    • Valid HPCSA registration;
    • Knowledge and experience of local TB/HIV management guidelines;
    • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office suite;
    • Community research or trial research experience would be advantageous;
    • Clinical trial or research experience would be advantageous;
    • Good Clinical Practice training advantageous;
    • Fluency in English, Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa;
    • A valid driver’s licence;
    • The willingness to work overtime or after hours, or both;
    • Willingness to work in a team;
    • Willingness to work in community settings where study is taking place;
    • Good communication and organisational skills; and
    • Willingness to travel to attend project-related trainings, meetings and events.

    REMUNERATION

    • A salary package commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience and qualifications and in line with HST’s Job Grading System will be offered.
