Medical Officers: Surgery - Sessional at Gauteng Department of Health

Requirements :

• Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent. MBChB/MBBCh or equivalent medical qualification and current registration with the HPCSA as an independent Medical Practitioner.
• Current registration with the HPCSA as an independent Medical Practitioner. Appropriate clinical experience in General Surgery will be an added advantage.
• Competency in the assessment and initial management of surgical emergencies and trauma is required. ATLS and/or relevant surgical emergency training will be an added advantage.
• Good clinical judgement, communication, teamwork and computer literacy skills. Inherent requirement of the post: Participation in the hospital's after-hours call system is compulsory.

Duties :

• Provide clinical care to patients within the General Surgery Department, including assessment, investigation, diagnosis, treatment, admission, discharge and appropriate referral.
• Assess, stabilise and manage surgical and trauma emergencies within the Medical Officer's scope of practice and escalate complicated cases appropriately. Assist with and perform surgical procedures according to level of competence and under appropriate supervision. Participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, theatre activities and multidisciplinary patient management.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and complete medico-legal documentation timeously. Participate in morbidity and mortality meetings, clinical audits, quality improvement, patient safety and other clinical governance activities. Promote appropriate utilisation of clinical resources and comply with relevant policies, protocols and clinical guidelines. Participate in departmental teaching and perform other reasonable duties delegated by the Head of Department or Hospital Management.
