    Medical Specialist Grade 1 – 3 [Neurosurgery]

    Requirements :

    • Senior/National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) and MBChB or equivalent certificate, MMed (Neurosurgery) or FCS (SA) or equivalent. Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa for Independent Practice [Medical Specialist] in Neurosurgery.
    • Medical Specialist Grade 1 no experience after registration with HPCSA,
    • Medical Specialist Grade 2 - A minimum of 05 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA and
    • Medical Specialist Grade 3 - A minimum of 10 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA in a normal Speciality.
    • Proof of current registration with the HPCSA from 01 April 2025 to 31 March 2026. Good leadership skills, excellent communication (verbal and written) skills, conflict resolution capacity and good interpersonal skills.
    • Experience in teaching and learning, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. This is a joint appointment between the University of Pretoria (Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Neurosurgery) and Steve Biko Academic Hospital.
    • The successful candidate must be able to work independently and in a high pressure environment. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team is valuable.

    Duties :

    • Provision of a comprehensive clinical service for patients at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and the cluster hospitals. Provision of undergraduate and postgraduate medical student teaching, provision of supervision and training of registrars, medical officers, interns and nurses. An ability to initiate and conduct quality research is preferred.
    • The appointed candidate will be expected to strengthen the regional and district health systems by providing outreach programmes. Participation in all divisional, departmental and faculty meetings to facilitate effective teaching and research as well as to enhance continuing professional development. Maintaining quality assurance standards and other departmental policies.
    • Attend meetings and training as approved by HOD. Comply with the Performance Management and Development system and overtime (contracting quarterly reviews and final assessment).
