    Medical Specialist Grade 1 to 3 (Otolaryngology) (Sessional :10 Hours Per Week) (Contract Position) (George Regional Hospital)

    Minimum educational qualification:

    • Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Otolaryngology.

    Inherent requirements of the job:

    • It will be expected of the successful candidate to comply with the governance processes of the department of health. A valid (Code B/EB) driver’s license and a willingness to travel.

    Experience:

    • Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist in Otolaryngology.
    • Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees) as Medical Specialist in Otolaryngology.
    • Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of foreign qualified employees) as Medical Specialist in Otolaryngology.

    Duties (key result areas/outputs):

    • Provision of definitive clinical Otolaryngology care within the scope of a regional hospital service, including assessment, management, elective surgery, ongoing care, emergency care, and appropriate referral of complex cases in accordance with established referral pathways to tertiary facilities.
    • Delivery of high-quality, patient-centred Otolaryngology services, ensuring efficient management of patient workload while maintaining clinical standards, patient safety, and service satisfaction.
    • Support and supervision of junior medical staff in the assessment, diagnosis, and management of Otolaryngology conditions, including bedside and procedural guidance within the clinical environment. Commitment to structured teaching and training of junior doctors, interns, and other healthcare professionals through informal bedside teaching, as well as formal academic activities such as lectures, tutorials, and case discussions.
    • Render an efficient, cost-effective high quality clinical service to patients managed by the hospital and district as the Rural East Ecosystem, by balancing throughput with quality. Active participation in departmental training programmes, continuing medical education (CME) activities, workshops, and professional development forums relevant to Otolaryngology and district/regional service delivery.
    • Involvement in clinical audits, quality assurance processes, and service improvement initiatives to strengthen Otolaryngology service delivery within the district and regional health system. Participation in data collection, clinical data management, and reporting of service statistics to support governance, monitoring, and planning of Otolaryngology services.
    • Support clinical governance and administrative functions within the Otolaryngology service, including medico-legal documentation, reporting requirements, staff-related administration, and compliance with departmental policies and protocols.
    • Active participation in the development and maintenance of clinical guidelines, protocols, and referral systems to ensure safe and effective Otolaryngology service delivery within a regional hospital platform.
    • Strong ethical standards and sound clinical judgement, with appropriate counselling skills for patients and families. Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, teamwork, and organisational skills suitable for a multidisciplinary regional hospital environment.

    Competencies (knowledge/skills):

    • Good work etiquette; excellent communication skills; conflict management; cost conscious care provision. Manage own theatre lists and provide clear guidance on outpatient bookings.
    • Good technology and computer skills; problem-solving experience; leadership and mentoring experience. Performance of audits, research and publications.
    • Experience in teaching, conducting and supervising research. Proven knowledge of public health policies, guidelines and related prescript to manage resources effectively.
