    Brief description

    • The purpose of this position is to drive the improvement of metadata maturity levels within the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Group (the SARB and its subsidiaries) to support reliable and effective decision-making.

    Detailed description 

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

    • Develop tactical strategies and related action plans specific to metadata.
    • Develop and promote metadata awareness across the organisation to ensure the appropriate collection and usage of data.
    • Create, maintain and integrate a metadata environment that enables the sharing and standardisation of business information.
    • Maintain and support the metadata platform as well as facilitate enhancements thereon.
    • Define business terms and develop a business dictionary/glossary to create a common understanding of business terms for the SARB Group and its relevant stakeholders.
    • Determine the usage and treatment of business terms as they relate to business operations and functions to create a common understanding thereof.
    • Develop controls for business terms to support reliable decision-making.
    • Monitor, measure and report on the metadata quality levels to ensure the correct information is captured.
    • Enable the improvement of metadata capability by developing and training relevant stakeholders in all aspects of metadata (e.g. the maintenance of the business glossary).
    • Play an oversight role in the remediation of metadata issues.
    • Proactively broaden own knowledge of metadata and apply new knowledge, technologies and skills for the benefit of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).
    • Actively participate in processes that continually aim to improve systems, processes and procedures as they relate to metadata.
    • Develop and manage stakeholder relations effectively to promote metadata awareness across the organisation and to support reliable decision-making.

    Job requirements

    To be considered for this position, candidates must have:

    • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Informatics, Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer Engineering or an equivalent NQF 7 qualification; and
    • Five to eight years’ of job-related experience within the metadata field.

    Additional requirements include:

    • Extensive knowledge of best practices/methodologies in data warehousing and multi-dimensional metadata (OLAP e.g. ESSBASE or Microsoft Analysis Services), system design and management;
    • Extensive knowledge of the most common RDBMS technologies (e.g. Oracle, IBM, SQLServer, MySQL);
    • Experience in deploying and managing Big Data environments (e.g. HADOOP, SPARK and NoSQL);
    • Knowledge of database querying languages (e.g. SQL); and
    • Experience in development using a broad variety of integration techniques, patterns, tools and methodologies.
