Job Description:

Reporting to the General Manager, this role will manage and co-ordinate the optimal operation of core mining and underground support structure activities of an underground mine to ensure safety and cost-effective extraction of ore according to operational requirements, targets, sound mining practice and in accordance with all relevant legislation.

Responsibilities:

• Strategy & System Design: Contribute to the formulation and implementation of the company Mining strategy, systems, and standards, as an integral member of the management team.
• Life of Mine Planning: Contribute to the formulation, motivation and approval of future expansion projects for the long term sustainability of underground operation. This is done in collaboration with Technical Services and Group Functions of long-term planning.
• Planning & Budget: Develop and execute a mining and projects plan, budgets, and resource allocation in order to demonstrate efficiency and effectiveness in achieving business performance objectives.
• Operational Management: Responsible to ensure the achievement of safe production and project objectives within required quality standards and budget by incorporating and aligning all relevant operational factors (i.e. organizational requirements, utilization of resources, reserve optimization, cost saving initiatives, equipment availability, standardization and continuous improvement).
• Continuous Improvement: Evaluate and implement mining production processes, systems, products, or new developments to integrate opportunities and mitigate deficiencies to ensure continuous improvement and alignment to mining best practice, policies, and plans.
• Standardization: Evaluate, implement, coordinate and control process maintenance standards, specifications and service levels for the Production, Engineering and Project functions.
• Coordinate and administrate the implementation of process changes to ensure the attainment of production targets and to ensure optimum process efficiencies.
• Culture: Establish a sustainable process to identify, assess and rank Mining risk as these relate to the business and operations, to promote a risk-aware culture, ensure that any potential impact is understood, and facilitate effective decision making and Mining risk mitigation.
• Risk Management & Liabilities: Contribute to the identification, analyzing and interpreting of Mining risks within the organization and contribute to the design and implementing of strategies and systems to mitigate risk and to prevent and reduce loss of the organization’s assets.
• Reporting, Monitoring & Evaluation, Audit: Ensure that all Mining reporting is aligned with standards, guidelines, and schedules.
• Coordinate control the preparation and ensure the timeous reporting of production results, records and reports.
• Safety, Health & Environment: Model behavior that is consistent with the Company Safety Vision and Values.
• Safety, Health & Environment: Identify and interpret safety risks and resolve emerging issues; and ensuring that appropriate focus and resources area available to achieve safety objectives.
• Engagement & Communication: Engage internal & external stakeholders on Mining related matters, and support BU’s on Mining related engagement, working within Corporate stakeholder engagement & communication standards, guidelines and strategies.
• Engagement & Communication: Establish & maintain good working relationships and an effective / sound communication system with the Mining Function.
• Manage labor complement and training requirements of the Mining Function (i.e. recruiting, selecting, orienting, training employees and identifying and developing personal growth opportunities).
• Direct, coordinate and ensure the development, mentoring and coaching of the operation's Mining Talent Pool in alignment with the technical and leadership training framework of the Mine to contribute to a positive and productive mining working environment.

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

• B Degree Mining Engineering OR BTech in Mining Engineering OR a National Higher Diploma in Mining Engineering.
• Mine Managers Certificate of Competence.
• Management Development Programme (MDP) OR equivalent qualification.
• Advantageous: Senior Management Development Programme (SMDP) OR equivalent qualification.
• A minimum of 10 years’ experience in an underground mine of which at least 5 years on a Senior/Manager level.
• Advantageous: Massive Mining experience.
• Computer Literacy and Microsoft Office Suite (Advanced).
