    Occupational Health Nurse

    Job Advert Summary    

    • The purpose of this position is to provide, coordinate, and manage Occupational Health and Primary Healthcare services for the site, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, company policies, and industry best practices. The role is responsible for promoting employee health, safety, and wellbeing through preventative, curative, and wellness-focused interventions that support a healthy and productive workforce.

    Requirements    
    Qualifications

    • Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC), with an additional qualification in Occupational Health
    • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Occupational Health Nursing
    • Valid professional indemnity cover
    • Registered with SASOHN as an Audiometrist 
    • Dispensing certificate 
    • Certification in vision screening, audiometry and spirometry.
    • Valid driver’s license and own reliable vehicle advantageous

    Experience

    • Relevant experience in Occupational Health and Primary Healthcare within an industrial or manufacturing environment.
    • Experience in applying job-related concepts, techniques, and processes at the required level.
    • Experience working with senior management and external medical service providers.

    Technical Skills

    • Sound knowledge of Occupational Health legislation and best practices.
    • Advanced computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and Occupational Health management systems.
    • Strong report writing and record management skills.
    • Fluent in Business English (written and verbal).

    Duties and Responsibilities    
    Occupational Health and Primary Healthcare Services

    • Conduct medical examinations, including pre-employment, pre-placement, periodic, annual, and exit medicals.
    • Provide treatment and first-line medical care for injuries on duty (IODs), workplace incidents, and illnesses involving permanent employees, contractors, and temporary labour.
    • Conduct Occupational Health surveys in collaboration with the Occupational Medical Practitioner.
    • Assist with Health Risk Assessments and the identification of workplace health hazards.
    • Dispense medication in accordance with applicable legislation and professional standards.
    • Liaise with medical specialists, doctors, hospitals, service providers, and management regarding employee health matters.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain an annual Medical Surveillance Programme.
    • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health legislation and company policies.

    Administration and Record Management

    • Maintain and update employee medical records and confidential health files.
    • Manage Injury on Duty (IOD) documentation, registers, and reporting processes.
    • Compile and distribute monthly Occupational Health reports and relevant statistics.
    • Monitor, order, and maintain adequate clinic and medical stock levels.
    • Develop, review, and maintain clinic procedures and documentation on the Entropy system.
    • Conduct monthly inspections and audits of First Aid boxes across the site.
    • Follow up on outstanding medical examinations and ensure completion in collaboration with line managers.
    • Attend and contribute to monthly SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) meetings.
    • Coordinate the annual calibration, servicing, and maintenance of medical equipment.
    • Support First Aiders through meetings, guidance, and training coordination.

    Health and Safety Management

    • Promote a positive health and safety culture through awareness campaigns, training sessions, and employee engagement initiatives.
    • Conduct routine workplace health and safety inspections to identify and mitigate health-related risks.
    • Provide health-related input into SHE programmes and continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Support incident investigations and recommend corrective and preventative actions where required

    Employee Wellness Management

    • Plan, coordinate, and drive employee wellness initiatives and awareness campaigns, including:
    • Heart Health Awareness
    • Anti-Tobacco Campaigns
    • Breast Cancer Awareness
    • Blood Donation Drives
    • Mental Health Awareness
    • HIV/AIDS and Chronic Disease Management Programmes
    • Other relevant health promotion activities
    • Coordinate employee wellness training, counselling, and support programmes, including financial wellbeing initiatives.
    • Monitor and support employees with chronic medical conditions to ensure effective disease management and workplace accommodation where necessary.
