Occupational Health Nursing Practitioner Specialty PNB1
Matric or Grade 12 qualification, a basic R425 qualification (i.e. Diploma / Degree in Nursing) or equivalent qualification that allows registration with SANC as a Professional Nurse, (Diploma or Degree) in Midwifery, post basic qualification (Degree or Diploma) in Occupational Health Nursing Science with a duration of at least 1 year, accredited with SANC in Occupational Health Nursing Science. Current registration with South African Nursing Council plus registration with SOSHA.
A minimum of 4 years appropriate / recognizable experience in Nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with SANC in General Nursing. Competencies: knowledge of legal prescripts that regulate nursing and health services.
Strong leadership and supervisory skills. Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and able to display management skills.
Computer literacy i.e. (Ms Word, PowerPoint). Conflict resolution and sound interpersonal skills are necessary. Extensive knowledge in all relevant OHS legislation and Ideal Hospital Realization and Maintenance Framework.
COIDA processes, Department of Labour, and Compensation Fund. Customer service (Batho Pele Principles). Report writing skills. Guidelines on COIDA. Planning, organizing and demonstration of empathy and advocacy skills towards clients. Employees will be required to work shifts.
Duties :
Operationalize and evaluate quality of Occupational Health Nursing Service rendered for employees as directed by Professional scope of practice and set Nursing standards within a professional / legal framework. Identify workplace hazards, conduct health assessments, and provide immediate care for work-related injuries / illnesses.
Create and implement health promotion, wellness, and safety education programs for employees. Ensures the workplace adheres to health and safety legislations and regulations.
Develop strategies to control identified hazards and reduce workplace injuries and illnesses. Conduct pre-employment, periodic and exit medical examinations, including physical, vision / hearing, and other screening. Administer vaccinations such as flu shots to employees. Assist with workers compensation cases and manage the case progression for injured employees. Accurate documentation / record keeping skills. Design employee medical surveillance programs together with Occupational Medicine Practitioner based on health risk assessment outcomes. Develop and implement Occupational Health Services (OHS) for employees.
Work collaboratively with other professionals as a leader and member of the Occupational Health and Safety team. Ensure accurate recording and reporting of statistics on all Occupational related incidents. Participate in Hazard risk Assessment Identification and OHS Annual Audit at the Hospital. Occupational Health Nursing and refer to Occupational Medical Practitioner in cases that need to consult further. Continuously liaise with stakeholders to ensure efficient Occupational Health Nursing care for all medical emergencies and specialist referrals to optimize health restoration of employees. Manage resources effectively in the Occupational Health Clinic.
Compile, analyse and submit monthly reports to Assistant Director: OHS and nursing Management for compliance purposes for the Hospital. Advocate for the awareness of employees in terms of workplace hazards and Occupational stressors. Be active in research and self-development. Supervise the subordinate nursing professionals at the Occupational Health Clinic.
Attend compulsory OHS Committee meetings. Develop protocols and SOPs for the effective implementation of OHS. Support the outputs of occupational Health and Safety Department towards compliance with the OHS and COID Act, hence meeting the Operational plan objectives and targets.
