Occupational Hygienist (REF: IVP-MTS-2618) at Ivanhoe Mines

Role purpose:

• The Occupational Hygienist will support the identification, assessment, monitoring, and control of occupational health hazards across the operation, ensuring compliance with applicable standards and contributing to a safer working environment

Suitable candidates must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:

• National Senior Certificate, Grade 12 Matric or equivalent.
• NQF Level 7 Qualification in Occupational Hygiene or related field, or Environmental Health.
• Chamber of Mines (CoM) Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (IMEC).
• Chamber of Mines (CoM) Certificate in Mine Environmental Control (COMEC).
• Registration with the South African Institute of Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) as an Occupational Hygienist.
• Valid drivers license.
• Knowledge of legal framework governing South African Mines.
• Computer literate in MS Office.
• Management of Occupational Hygiene Systems.
• Data Science and analysis.
• Linkage of Occupational Hygiene measurements and medical records.

Suitable candidates must affiliate with a Professional Body:

• Registration with the South African Institute of Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) as an Occupational Hygienist l
• Member/Associate with the Mine Ventilation Society Of South Africa (MVSSA).

Suitable candidates must have the following work experience:

• Minimum of 8 years’ experience in the field of and Occupational Hygiene and Mine Environmental Engineering.
• Minimum of 4 years’ experience in Metallurgical Production and Processing Plants.

The Role requirements includes, but not be limited to:

• Ensure that legal requirements, IVP standards and policies are adhered to, to achieve legal compliance.
• Interpretation of legal requirements.
• Ensures adherence to legal compliance through monitoring and reporting.
• Responsible for ensuring policies, programmes, standards, codes of practice and procedures are developed and maintained in accordance with legal requirements.
• Statutory Plans are in place and up to date

Maintain Occupational Hygiene strategies and systems.

• Develop and revise Occupational Hygiene Baseline Risk Assessment and monitoring structures / incorporate findings into the Operational Business Safety Baseline Risk Assessment
• Developing and managing site specific Occupational Hygiene Program & Monitoring Program
• Develop or revise and implement annual Occupational Hygiene sampling and measurement strategy, in line with regulatory legal requirements.
• Develop Occupational Health Risk Management framework aligned with operational Risk Management framework
• Develop Occupational Hygiene Risk Assessments as per operational requirements, in line with regulatory legal requirements.
• Develop and implement methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of control measures identified to manage exposure Occupational Health Hazards/Risks.
• Develop and implement procedures to ensure occupational health threating occurrences are investigated in line with regulatory legal requirements.
• Ensure coordination of the personal sampling (pre- & post- sampling preparations & downloading) (Personal noise- & Personal Airborne Pollutants monitoring, as per annual schedule), taking account issue of Quality assurance and control in line regulatory legal requirements.
• Ensuring management and maintenance of sample media registers (filter, calibration & equipment registers) for personal airborne pollutant sampling), taking account issue of Quality assurance and control in line regulatory legal requirements.
• Maintain/manage occupational hygiene measuring instrumentation register and calibrations.
• Arranging with SANAS accredited laboratories for the in-depth analysis of personal airborne pollutant sampling media.
• Capturing and reporting results (Capturing of the personal exposure measurement results). Document / Record control to be checked, coordinated and managed.
• Capturing, Analise and Scrutinize Lab Results (for DMPR reporting, Risk Assessment- & Health Improvement planning purposes)
• Communicating personal exposure measurement results on operational forums.
• Investigation of all personal airborne pollutants & personal noise measurements with high results (exceeding OELS, industry best practice and 2034 milestones), in order to institute recommendation to correct failures within controls and / or highlight the need for new/better controls to be implemented
• Quarterly Monitoring data are to be compiled and Reports are submitted to the regional principle inspector (in the prescribed format, which contain information on the airborne pollutant, heat stress, cold stress and noise aspects of the system of occupational hygiene measurements)
• Quarterly Data management & Reporting milestone data to Minerals Council of South Africa (in line with the 2034 Milestone requirements)
• Maintaining a noise register for all equipment installed/working at the operation, monitoring of such equipment must be done in accordance to Minerals Council of South Africa guidelines.
• Coordinating NIHL investigations, submission of Section 11 investigation to the DMPR and feedback to hospital. Continued liaison with NIHL investigations greater than 10% for Rand mutual compensation submission.
• Measure compliance with Section 11 and 12 of the Mine Health and Safety Act (Occupational Health Risk Assessment and Monitoring).
• Measure compliance with the Environmental Engineering and Occupational Hygiene Regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Act pertaining to monitoring and reporting.
• Ensuring Occupational Hygiene programmes are properly administered.
• Assist in the development of the best practices, standards and procedures.
• Assist in development of Occupational Hygiene related codes of practices.
• Advice on management on Business Area Occupational Hygiene planning, technical systems and administration.
• Assist in the implementation and maintenance of Emergency preparedness programmes.
• Report and advice on Occupational Hygiene matters.
• Participate in Occupational Health technological improvement studies.
• Provide solutions to specific Occupational Health/Hygiene related issues (known or identified via trend analysis).
• Adhere to ventilation engineering and occupational hygiene policies, procedures and standards.
• Conducts routine occupational hygiene inspections, records and reports on findings.
• Sets daily, weekly and monthly occupational hygiene milestones.

Identification, evaluation and recommendation of appropriate interventions. Reporting structures

• Ensure there’s an Occupational Health monitoring system in place, and resourced for the purpose of compliance and managing occupational health risks emanating from activities conducted at the mine.
• Ensure deadlines pertaining to monitoring systems are complied to (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly).
• Meetings with managers and employees on health and hygiene matters.
• Advice on changes to plans, schedules, procedures and standards to minimize the effect of unexpected or unsafe work practices.
• Ensures adherence to legal compliance in terms of required reports.
• Ensure valid statistics for occupational hygiene are available for all workplaces or sections of the business area.
• Timeous submission of statutory reports.
• Occupational related exposure histories are recorded and reported.
• Management of occupational health emergency preparedness and response systems.
• Promotes a safe and healthy working environment.

Operational Risk Management and auditing.

• Maintain an effective risk management programmes.
• Participate in audits.
• Ensure follow up of risk assessments and audits findings, and the implementation of recommendations made.
