    Paralegal

    Purpose of the position:

    • The incumbent will play a key role in strengthening community-based human rights interventions by providing legal and strategic support to Human Rights Ambassadors/Reactors. The Paralegal is responsible for reviewing and assessing human rights violation cases documented by Ambassadors/Reactors, providing basic legal guidance on appropriate next steps, and ensuring accurate referrals or escalations to THC Legal Officers where further legal review is required

    Minimum Requirements    

    • Matric certificate or equivalent NQF qualification
    • Certificate or Diploma in Paralegal Studies, Human Rights, or related legal/social justice field (advantageous)
    • Accredited community paralegal training or recognised short courses in human rights, legal rights awareness, or access to justice (strongly preferred)
    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in lobbying/advocacy/human rights or programming in the public health or HIV field
    • Experience in conducting training and workshops
    • Foundational knowledge of South African Human Rights and Legal Frameworks
    • Strong ability to mentor community-based staff
    • Experience in advocating for minority key population health, social and legal rights
    • Experience in harm reduction and key population programming beneficial
    • Experience in engaging with stakeholders to reduce stigma and discrimination
    • MS Office proficiency
    • Clear criminal record
    • Ability to travel as and when required

    Duties and Responsibilities    

    • Network and advocate for the human rights of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) and Young, Key and Vulnerable Populations (YKVP’s)
    • Conduct sensitisation workshops to stakeholders per quarter
    • Support and monitor the collection of human rights violations.
    • Assist community members to draft and complete affidavits, statements, and complaints
    • Gender based violence response
    • Human rights Ambassador/Reactor support and supervision
    • Reporting, Administration and Facilitation
    • Attend meetings, briefings, debriefing, staff meetings and other as directed to do so on a regular basis
