    Postdoctoral Research Fellowship - Department of Zoology and Entomology (1-Year Contract, Renewable up to 3 Years)

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Contribute to Nematode Diagnostic Lab by counting nematode samples and morphological identification of PPN and free-living nematodes.
    • Develop and implement strategies for the biological control of PPN, especially RKN.
    • Perform screenings to isolate antagonistic microbes associated with PPN with focus on RKN
    • Investigate the interaction between nematodes and antagonistic microbes via in vitro and greenhouse experiments
    • Utilise qPCR and gene expression techniques in nematode-microbe interaction studies.
    • Deliver engaging presentations at national and international conferences.
    • Provide supervision and mentorship to postgraduate students.
    • Initiate projects and seek funding for them
    • Renewal of the fellowship beyond the first year depends on satisfactory performance and the submission of an annual progress report.

    Eligibility criteria: 

    • A PhD degree On NQF Level 10  in Nematology, Agriculture science, Biological science or relevant discipline within the last five years.
    • Proven expertise in research related to plant nematology.
    • Good publication record in accredited peer-reviewed journals related to nematology.
    • Prior experience with PCR-based analyses and molecular identification.
    • Experience in designing and executing nematode-based greenhouse studies.
    • Strong communication skills in English (both verbal and written).
    • Open to all South Africans and foreign nationals.
    • Willingness to reside at the UFS and participate in relevant activities of the Centre for Graduate Support and the Directorate of Research.
