Short Description / Purpose of Job

• The Principal Engineer Upstream Concept Development will be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all Upstream Concept Development (UCD) work including onshore and offshore providing expert inputs into all aspects of developments and opportunities enabling Gas Sourcing and Operations (GSO) business decisions. He/She is accountable for the engineering scope of projects and studies up to the start of the Define Phase. 

Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities

• Accountable to provide insight into development solutions, technical aspects, cost, technology, risks, challenges, schedule and optimisation as required to evaluate and support onshore, offshore, upstream and midstream opportunities, decisions and developments.
• Accountable to ensure the risk and uncertainty related to upstream is suitably allowed for in the FEL and evaluation of GSO opportunities.
• Accountable for the integration between sub surface, wells and facilities and to provide a full development perspective.
• To lead the Integration throughout the project development, execution and ongoing operation to ensure success.
• To provide knowledge and experience to challenge cost, schedule, technology etc. as presented by sellers or partners to support detail evaluation of opportunities.
• Subject Matter Expert (SME) for UCD to support complex decisions on onshore and offshore developments as well as LNG and Pipeline gas providing inputs into business and assurance processes.
• Accountable to develop, assure, guide and mentor other Engineers in the UCD team on all matters related to Concept Development.
• To Ensure the UCD team is up to date with latest upstream technologies and best practises
• Ensure standards and practises for all UCD activities providing team members with expert assistance and guidance
• Develop and ensure work processes with MGP to enable seamless transition to MGP at BD&I/IEPMS Gate 3 ​
• Develop and maintain contracts with third party concept development consultants
• Define UCD Skills and competency assessment and development
• Accountable for Engineering EITs development planning and management

Formal Education

• Relevant University Bachelor’s in Engineering Degree

Min Experience

Minimum 12 years relevant international experience required across multiple upstream development and operating environments including offshore, deepwater and complex fluids.  Experience in Upstream Concept Development, Front end Loading (FEL), Project Execution and Operations as wells as an Integrated understanding of Sub Surface, Wells and Facilities is essential to provide expert support for Sasol decisions.

The following knowledge and experience are of critical importance (expert level for all facilities aspects):

• Offshore and onshore, upstream and midstream development, execution and operations
• Subsea developments and Tiebacks
• Exploration activities and results and their implication on FEL
• Uncertainty and changes in feedstock
• Across discipline upstream perspective [Sub Surface (including Geology, Geophysics, Petrophysics, Reservoir and Petroleum Engineering), Wells and Facilities]
• Understanding and experience of the full NG value chain
• Integration between various opportunities
• Proper understanding of challenges in other disciplines
• Integration with other upstream disciplines (SS, Wells, Facilities)
• Development scenario cost estimation including CAPEX and OPEX
• Execution planning
• Upstream technology
• Unconventional knowledge
• Discipline Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Controls, Mechanical & Process)
