Principal Mineral Economist at Mintek

OBJECTIVE:    

Procuring major research projects by providing unique expertise within a particular, specialized scientific or engineering area of expertise; direct and implement research and development, experimental and service work, as well as conceptualize new ideas in technology or research which could benefit the industry and the country in the long term.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

Business Management

• Participate in the formulation of the division’s long-term policies, plans, and strategy.
• Manage collaborative projects with local and international institutes.
• Formulate Section marketing plan & strategy to ensure effective market exposure and secure on-going commercial revenue.
• Business Development & interaction with the Mintek’s relevant stakeholder universe.
• Source commercial projects and Economic feasibility studies.

Resource Management

• Database development from primary source data.
• Develop mining sector databases that are compatible with Mintek’s and client systems: Data feeds.
• Interactive Mapping: Advanced mapping tool that combines comprehensive Metals & Mining data with other layers of information (i.e., Economic indicators, Country Risks, Global infrastructure, Local trends, and etc.) to generate required reports.
• Generate Cost models from production data and economic data.
• Research and understand techniques to analyse data (Qualitative and Quantitative).
• Undertake both the financial and technical input in mineral projects for modelling to create income statement, balance sheet and cash flow models.
• Provide concise, informative, and accurate reports on all research undertaken.
• Conduct economic research for Mining and Minerals Economics (MME) and provide strategic input/support to other Divisions.

General

• Stakeholder Engagement within the minerals industry including government departments and private industry.
• Create and present effective presentations at local and international conferences / workshops.
• Market & trend analysis insights (Identify important issues regarding economic developments in the sector through presentations, workshops, meetings, and visits).
• Coordinate quarterly briefings on commodities & ensure Mintek’s visibility.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Min: PhD in Mineral Related Degrees (i.e., Geology, Mining or Economics or Statistics or related fields)
• Added Advantage: MBA
• Must be trained in Geology, Mining, Economics or Statistics; Project Management.
• Commercial experience building econometrics models (preferably in production settings).
• Financial Modelling & Valuation
• 10 years relevant industry experience in mineral-related commodity.
