    Principal - Water Sustainability

    Job Description

    Purpose:

    To develop and drive a water management plan for Anglo American, and to develop, implement and deliver the Group-wide Water Efficiency Program to support the overall Sustainable Mining Plan objectives and associated water targets, setting of targets, reporting and external engagements.

    *Please note: This opportunity can be based in Johannesburg or London. 

    • Develop a group-wide water management plan for Anglo American, based on global best practice. The plan should be developed through a multi-stakeholder approach such as Group Functions (e.g. processing, technology development etc.) and Business Units.
    • Develop a communications and change management plan for the water management plan implementation across the company.
    • Identify, scope and evaluate project opportunities to implement at Operations; support BU's and Operations to implement such projects; monitor and report project advancement against established targets.
    • Responsible to track progress (monthly and quarterly) against 2030 water targets within the Sustainable Mining Plan, flag potential issues and provide analysis of trends, data verification, reporting as required.
    • Formulate technical responses to external queries water related questions by communications department, legal and other.
    • Support development of water management tools, development of guideline documents, baselining of water reporting data to definitions, water accounting balances and data interpretation, for monthly, quarterly and annual SSD reporting for Water.
    • Develop BU and site level targets, in collaboration with BU's, and agree on implementation programs to achieve the Group target. Support consultant coordination work to re-baseline of Water Reporting Data according to new definitions (ICMM, fresh water). Identify the most cost effective and efficient interventions to drive towards the Group water targets. Develop and coordinate Functional Lead input to develop the scope of work to improve water efficiency and implement technology to support Sustainable Mining Plan Water Targets.
    • Actively support the Lead Water Management specialists in projects and studies related to water security, water efficiency, water management and sustainable water reporting assignments.
    • Responsible to track progress (monthly and quarterly) against 2030 water targets within the Sustainable Mining Plan, flag potential issues and provide analysis of trends, data verification, reporting as required.
    • In collaboration with senior peers, participate in the comprehensive analysis of internal Anglo American technology and innovation efforts towards reducing of freshwater withdrawals and efficient water usage trends, practices and technological developments.

     

    Experience: 

    • A demonstrated thought leader and considered a global expert in sustainable water management, specifically focusing on setting of sustainability water management targets and leading practice in implementation of sustainable water strategies.
    • Track record of operational experience within a large global multi-commodity mining, manufacturing or related industry
    • Successfully implemented and executed complex system, capital and/or management of change projects related to water management and sustainable water planning and implementation
    • Demonstrated experience in a senior role within a technical environment, including the coordination of knowledge sharing across disciplines, communication of water strategies across multiple business units, and global water reporting (internal and external).

     

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelors / Honours degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or Chemical Engineering. Specialized in strategic water management, sustainable water utilization in the mining industry, water efficiency, water resources optimization, and mine water management.
