    Professor/Associate Professor (College of Business & Economics: School of Economics: Centre for Competition, Regulation and Economic Development)

    Job Description:

    • The University of Johannesburg invites suitably qualified individuals to apply for the position of a Professor / Associate Professor in the School of Economics.
    • The applicants to these posts are expected to support our programmes by performing full academic duties that include teaching, postgraduate supervision, and a strong focus on research. This is especially in the areas of competition and regulation economics and / or sustainable industrial development in Africa.

    Responsibilities:

    The responsibilities will include:

    Research:

    • Work on and lead projects as part of collaborative teams on research related to competition, regulation, and sustainable industrial development in Africa.
    • Contribute to designing research programmes to shape policies for inclusive markets and sustainable development in Africa.
    • Proactively identify opportunities and apply for substantial grants for collaborative, multi-year research projects in the field of competition, regulation and sustainable industrial development in Africa.
    • Lead and mentor emerging and early career Researchers in the broader economics.
    • Improve and increase personal knowledge of the field of competition, regulation and sustainable industrial development through research, publications and postgraduate supervision.
    • Drawing from research, design and coordinate teaching and learning programmes, such as short learning programmes and professional training programmes, in the field of competition and regulation economics, and sustainable industrial development for professionals in Africa.
    • Contribute to publications in key national or international peer-reviewed academic journals and to other appropriate forms of research output.
    • Participate and present in local, regional and international conferences in the field.
    • Contribute to the development of the school through the generation of research, teaching and scholarship of international excellence.
    • There must be a strong commitment to excellence in productive research and postgraduate research supervision, as well as the promotion of UJ's strategic objectives.

    Teaching and Learning:

    • Coordinate Master’s level programmes in competition, economic regulation and sustainable industrial development within the School of Economics.
    • Liaise closely with internal and external Lecturers and Supervisors as part of programme development and delivery.
    • Lecture and assess postgraduate students in the School of Economics.
    • Supervise Honours research projects, Master’s dissertations and PhD theses to completion.
    • Play a leading role in developing new courses or modules, individually and/or collectively taught and participate in ongoing development of aspects of course structure, delivery, assessment, etc.
    • Preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars.
    • Communicate effectively with students and colleagues.
    • Invigilate during University examinations or assessments.
    • Ensure that students and staff adhere to the University’s Rules and Regulations.
    • Participate in official gatherings of the University and committees to which the incumbent has been nominated.
    • Participate in official meetings of the School, College and UJ.
    • Assume various administrative tasks and responsibilities (junior and/or more senior) as requested by the Director of the School.

    Community Development:

    • Initiate and participate in community engagement projects and Pan-African partnership activities.

    Individual Value Add:

    • Participation and presentation in the School seminars.
    • Collaboration with academics at other universities including international partnerships.
    • Contributing constructively to the team through taking a leadership position.
    • Functioning as a role model setting standards of excellence.

    Minimum requirements

    • A relevant PhD (NQF 10) qualification.
    • An extensive track record in applied research, and demonstrated initiative in addressing real-world research challenges, may be considered.
    • Experience working in competition, economic regulation and industrial policy areas, and/or proven research ability.
    • Sound knowledge of economic theory, and principles in competition, regulation and industrial policy.
    • The ability to publish research findings in high-ranked accredited/peer-reviewed journals.
    • Experience in supervising postgraduate students at PhD and Master’s level.
    • Proven knowledge and experience in Research Methodologies relevant to the Economics discipline (especially in the areas of Industrial Policy; Competition and Regulation; Sustainable Development) at postgraduate level.
    • Proven experience in attracting, applying for and executing external grant funded projects and research.
    • Proven experience in research leadership and management of research teams.

    Recommendations:

    • An NRF rating (or equivalent), or the capability of obtaining one within three (3) to five (5) years.
    • Knowledge of online teaching methodologies.

    • Good listening skills.
    • Good conflict management skills.
