    Professor (Faculty of Humanities: Department of African Languages)

    Job Purpose:

    • Supervise and lecture in isiXhosa and other African languages in the department of African languages.

    Responsibilities:
    Teaching & Learning

    • Lecture isiXhosa and methodologies at undergraduate, and PGE at postgraduate level.
    • Lecture African languages at Honours level.

    Research 

    • Conduct research and publish at least three accredited research units.

    Supervision

    • Supervise postgraduate students at Honours, Masters and at PhD level.

    Academic Citizenship

    • Contribute positively to the departmental administration duties.
    • Participate in departmental/faculty activities/committees.
    • Provide guidance to junior colleagues.

    Community engagement

    • Participate in community engagements outside of the university.

    Minimum requirements

    • PhD in African Languages
    • Ten (10) years' of experience as Lecturer
    • Ten (10) years’ experience in curricular design
    • Teaching of isiXhosa
    • Ability to conduct credible research
    • Supervision of PG students

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in academic English.
    • Good time management skills.
    • Good planning and organising skills.
    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • Good listening skills.
    • Good conflict management skills.
    • Ability to monitor and coach student performance and provide critical feedback in an objective and professional manner.
    • Proven ability to think critically, analytically and laterally across disciplines and sectors (transdisciplinary).

    Recommendations:

    • Experience in teaching at the University of Johannesburg.
    • Practical experience in the relevant subject disciplines.
    • Proven ability to conduct research.
    • Research experience in relevant subject disciplines.
    • An excellent record of relevant academic publications.
    • Experience in supervising postgraduate students.
    • Knowledge of Higher Education Qualifications Framework.
    • Departmental/ discipline knowledge regarding the relevant programme(s).
    • Online teaching and learning strategies and methods.
    • Assessment practices.
