    Project Manager: Business and Human Rights Unit (Faculty of Law)

    BACKGROUND

    • The Business and Human Rights Unit in the Centre for Human Rights, Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria,  is committed to finding evidence-based ways of addressing human rights impacts of business on the African continent by conducting research on international business and human rights standards, building capacity among governments, the corporate sector, academia, civil society and communities, investigating the human rights and environmental impacts of business in Africa, and engaging with judicial, quasi-judicial and non-judicial redress mechanisms. This Unit in the Centre also supports the management of the African Coalition for Corporate Accountability (ACCA).  

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The successful candidate must be able to:

    • Think innovatively about business and human rights in a changing world where the environment is more and more under threat and technology plays an ever-increasing role that can both enhance and undermine human rights. 
    • Responsible for project designing, managing and implementing;
    • Fundraising and oversight of spending;
    • Maintaining and building relationships with donors and other partners;
    • Representing the Centre internationally and at the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights;
    • Contributing intellectually to develop the field.

     
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A Masters' degree in a related field;
    • Five years relevant professional experience (with organizations ideally in the field of business and human rights or corporate social responsibility);
    • A successful track record of raising and managing funds for not-for-profit organizations from major donors, foundations, and members;

     
    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Excellent computer skills in MS Excel and other financial programmes and systems;
    • Enthusiasm for the Centre’s mission and campaigns;
    • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills;
    • Highly motivated;
    • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and consistently meet deadlines;
    • Experience in project designing, managing and implementing related to business and human rights
    • Confidence and the ability to be proactive, think quickly, and work independently.

     
    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • A Doctoral degree, or any additional qualification, in a relevant field;
    • Experience working in a multicultural environment;
    • Familiarity with international and regional human rights law and legal frameworks relevant to corporate accountability;
    • Pre-existing relationships within the NGO community, as well as with foundations, media, and relevant policymakers;
    • Knowledge of additional regional languages, such as Swahili, Portuguese, or French.
