    Project Manager

    Introduction

    The role of the Project Manager (PM) will be to support the company’s mission of developing, financing, constructing, and operating Commercial & Industrial microgrid, storage and grid-tied solar projects in Africa (including South Africa).

    The PM role is multi-faceted but has a primary focus of assisting in planning, engineering, delivering, commissioning, and testing of projects according to strict deadlines and within budget. The incumbent will aid in managing all technical and engineering aspects of project opportunities from inception to construction with limited guidance. This includes acquiring/managing resources and coordinating the efforts of team members and contractors to deliver projects according to plan and specifications.

     

    The successful candidate will need to demonstrate great attention to detail with excellent management skills and multi-tasking abilities. The PM will be a consummate team player and be a self-starting, creative, and motivated individual who has a proven history of successfully delivery energy projects in Africa. This individual would thrive in an entrepreneurial, dynamic, fast-paced environment.

    Project size would range from 20kWp to 20MWp. Occasional overtime may be required to meet critical project deadlines. Candidate should be willing to travel within South Africa, as well as other African countries, with travelling expected up to 50%, depending on project stages.

    Countries you will be expected to travel to include: Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Namibia, Tanzania and South Africa.

     

    Principal responsibilities:

    • Responsible for project development ownership and execution, which requires understanding/managing the scope, schedule, budget and expectations of all stakeholders.
    • Manage engineering deliverables to support sales and business development efforts, including customized requests for single-line drawings, communication wiring diagrams, and system layouts.
    • Undertake technical due diligence for projects/acquisitions and/or suppliers either directly or with support of other departments to verify compliance from a technology and project/plant design perspective.
    • Analyse energy consumption from end-user electricity bills, diesel consumption reports, logged data, consumption patterns and other load parameters.
    • Develop and/or conduct specific project documentation requirements over the entire project lifecycle including site assessment and layout, planning, contracting, permitting, procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.
    • Work with technical partners to develop project Design Drawings, Simulations, Scope of Works (SOW), Bill of Quantities (BOQ), project proposals, full-scale project plans, schedules and associated communications documents.
    • Perform commissioning checks on-site with contractors to ensure the system has been delivered according to predefined parameters and specification up to SolarAfrica standards.
    • Gather and disseminate the technical and regulatory requirements of the local market.
    • Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential risks, and devise contingency plans.
    • Provide information to the manager on project tasks, deliverables and interdependencies and the impact on the project delivery timeframe to prevent or manage any delays. Build, develop, and grow any business relationships vital to the success of the project.
    • Communicate project requirements to procurement department to ensure timely delivery of project inventory.
    • On-site supervision as required.
    • Develop best practices and tools for project execution.
    • Identify gaps in scope and responsibility to ensure project success. This requires a comprehensive understanding of engineering, construction, interconnection and permitting concepts, costs and rules of conduct.
    • Any other job duties as assigned.

     

    Experience:

    • Must have 2 years of proven electrical engineering experience, with a formal Technicon or University qualification(s).
    • Excellent project management and technical skills.
    • Driver’s license essential.
    • In-depth knowledge of the PV industry: C&I microgrids, solar & storage.
    • Strong communication & interpersonal skills.
    • Must be able to work to strict deadlines & budgets.
    • Ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, business development, and construction personnel.
    • Proficient in MS Word, Microsoft Projects and an expert, extremely competent in Excel.

     

    Advantageous Skills includes 

    • Strong Knowledge of Construction & Supply Agreements (e.g. FIDIC).
    • Experience with diesel/LPG generators, solar inverters and battery storage technologies.
    • Knowledge of codes and regulations applicable in Africa; Experience with industrial electrical installations and of the electricity distribution system in Africa.
    • Knowledge of battery systems, power conversion, MV/HV systems, IT and data communication systems, and control systems
    • Experience using PVSyst, Helioscope or equivalent simulation packages.

    • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment is crucial.
    • You must be able to demonstrate good attention to detail, good judgement showing logical decision making, and a hands-on approach.
    • Strong leadership skills.
