    Research Assistant in New Human Project

    Organization Name: Evolutionary Studies Institute    
    Job Summary:

    The Phillip Tobias Chair in the Evolutionary Studies Institute, University of the Witwatersrand is seeking a qualified, motivated person to act as a Research Assistant for a European Research Council funded project in conjunction with the School of Anthropology and Conservation, University of Kent, United Kingdom.  (100% Full-time basis for 2 years, renewable subject to grant for an additional 2 years).
            
    Minimum Requirements:

    • A Hons qualification in a relevant field, or demonstration of a higher technical qualification in radiography, computer sciences or related fields
    • Relevant experience in research environment 
    • Experience in data management and collection would be an advantage
    • Experience working with digital databases.
    • Existing curatorial experience will be advantageous.

    Key Competencies: 

    • The successful candidate should have experience with, or show an aptitude for acquiring skills in the collection of digital data including surface scanning, photogrammetry and working with other forms of digital data such as CT data
    • Excellent attention to detail.
    • Good interpersonal skills
    • Must take initiative and be results-orientated
    • Ability to work quickly and effectively under pressure
    • Must work as part of a team
    • Excellent computer literacy skills
    • Good command of the English language (verbal and written)
    • Work within deadlines
    • Integrity, reliability and dependability 

    Key Performance Areas
    The successful candidate will work closely with senior researchers in both institutions performing:

    • Curatorial functions,
    • General research tasks
    • Data management,
    • Interdepartmental communications
    • Data collection both digital and physical data on important hominid, faunal fossils and artefacts held in the collections of the University of the Witwatersrand and other institutions as required.

    Shortlisted candidates may be subjected to a competency assessment.
