    Research Fellow: Senior Research Specialist level - Cape Town

    Minimum Requirements

    • A PhD in one of the following; Environmental Law, Governance and Policy Analysis, Climate and Disaster Management policy or other appropriate policy related qualification.
    • At least 6 years’ experience working on government policy and policy evaluations.
    • Post-graduation training experience (teaching and supervising post graduate students, Masters and/or PhD students).
    • Experience working on multi-disciplinary projects
    • A strong record of published research in both local and international journals, and/ or a strong record of public policy analysis (at least 7 publications in peer reviewed journals).
    • Intellectual and personal integrity, imagination, and drive.
    • Advantages
    • Membership of a recognise professional, community of practice bodies/bodies
    • Fluency in an African language spoken in Southern and/or East Africa
    • Experience working in the Southern and/or Eastern region
    • Working experience in government, regional bodies such as SABC, AU on policy issues.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • The Senior Research Specialist policy analyst will work with other senior researchers (Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and other subject matter experts) and he/she will lead the policy research portfolio of the CzASE programme. Some of the key functions of this position includes:
    • Undertaking baseline studies on the laws and policies that governing the relation between humans and the land (broadly defined) for participating countries and the region(s).
    • Undertake research to critically look at these laws and policies and how they related to local thinking and knowledge about the land, seas, life, science, politics and quality of life.
    • Design case studies of local knowledge and indigenous systems and critique how these related to laws and policies on soil use.
    • Support the CzASE training programme for Masters and PhD interns by developing learning material on law, policy,
    • Facilitating and/or conducting workshops on laws, policies, critical thinking and local systems with different stakeholders (government officials, regional body officials, researchers, research fellows, civil society, pressure groups etc) In delivering ‘social science that makes a difference’, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.
    • Support evidence-based policy making engaging with policy makers by providing appropriate research papers, tools and or evaluation of policy decisions.
    • Lead research on communication of science in policy making and the public, including the use of local knowledge at national and regional level.
    • Contribute to research outputs, publications in peer reviewed journals, policy briefs, books and other appropriate publications that are evidence based but more accessible to the public.
