    Research Nurse

    • This is a rare opportunity to do work that genuinely matters. A women's health research team based at a public hospital in Westdene, Johannesburg, operates through a clinical research unit focused on cervical cancer prevention and sexual and reproductive health. The team runs rigorous, protocol-driven clinical trials, with a strong track record of meaningful research in women's health, including work with women living with HIV. The environment is academic, purpose-led, and deeply committed to advancing health outcomes for women in South Africa.
    • This is not a routine nursing role. The successful candidate will play a central part in bringing a new clinical trial to life, from recruiting and enrolling participants through to managing study visits, collecting and processing specimens, and maintaining the kind of meticulous documentation that good clinical research demands. If you thrive in a structured yet fast-moving environment, enjoy working across clinic, pharmacy, and lab teams, and want your clinical skills to contribute directly to research that reaches real communities, this role was built for you.

    What's in it for you

    • Be part of meaningful, purpose-driven research focused on cervical cancer prevention and women's health.
    • Join a well-regarded, experienced research team with a history of high-quality clinical trials.
    • Build and apply a rare combination of clinical and research skills in a single role.
    • Work in an academic environment that values precision, initiative, and continuous learning.
    • Contribute findings that are shared with community stakeholders and have real-world impact.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Registered professional nurse, enrolled nurse, or equivalent qualification recognised by the South African Nursing Council.
    • Active registration with the South African Nursing Council at the time of application.
    • Valid Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification and training in the protection of human subjects.
    • Minimum two years of experience in clinical research or public health.
    • Spoken and written fluency in English and IsiZulu or Sesotho.
    • Strong computer literacy with solid writing and presentation skills.
    • Demonstrated experience in clinical research.
    • Demonstrated experience in cancer, sexual and reproductive health, or HIV programmes.
    • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and data capture.
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and take initiative.
    • Clinical experience in women's sexual and reproductive health services such as Pap smear screening, STI screening, or family planning is a strong advantage.
    • Prior experience in clinical trials is advantageous.
    • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is advantageous.
    • Willingness to work overtime or weekends when required.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist the study coordinator and investigators with planning, setting up, and managing day-to-day clinical trial activities in line with the approved protocol, GCP, and SOPs.
    • Recruit participants and support screening, enrolment, and ongoing retention through follow-up, reminder calls, and tracing of participants lost to follow-up.
    • Administer and accurately document informed consent for all study participants.
    • Schedule and coordinate study visits, liaising with clinic, pharmacy, and laboratory staff to ensure smooth visit flow.
    • Provide health education to participants, including HIV pre- and post-test counselling and results counselling.
    • Perform study procedures including vital signs, phlebotomy, pregnancy tests, pelvic examinations, Pap smears, HPV tests, and STI tests.
    • Administer investigational products or study drugs as directed.
    • Support collection, processing, labelling, storage, and tracking of all biological specimens.
    • Maintain accurate, complete, and contemporaneous source documents, case report forms, study logs, and participant records.
    • Capture study data into the electronic data capture system, resolve data queries, and support quality control of records.
    • Assist with assessing, documenting, and reporting adverse events and protocol deviations to the study coordinator and investigators.
    • Help maintain the investigator site file and support readiness for monitoring visits, audits, and regulatory reporting.
    • Assist with preparing study-related reports, presentations, and educational materials, and share findings with community stakeholders as requested.
    • Provide routine clinical care as requested.
