    Risk Engineer

    About the job

    The role holder will be responsible to provides risk assessment and risk improvement services for customers and business partners. Develops and maintains long-term customer relationships. The provision of comprehensive risk insight is often for multiple lines or specialised industries of business and for global market and relationships customers. The Risk Engineer is expected to have already achieved the equivalent of one or more of the following qualifications and/or is studying toward:

    • Technical Degree in Safety Management
    • Technology Degree in Safety Management
    • National Diploma in Safety Management
    • CFPA EU Diploma in Fire Prevention
    • Risk Management
    • Firefighting experience would be advantageous
    • Business Management

    Key Tasks & Accountabilities

    With limited technical supervision:

    • Assess the quality of moderately complex risks as described in the appropriate Q2P standard(s) and related competency level (3)
    • Assess loss potentials in accordance with agreed definitions
    • Support external customers by identifying, assessing, and reducing the risks that they face individually and on an overall account basis
    • Use templates to record assessments and collect photographic evidence
    • Prepare detailed reports and presentations
    • Provide appropriate risk improvement advice and implement risk improvement programs
    • Provides effective advice on risk management issues to external customers and internal business partners
    • Explores new service area opportunities, develops new lines of business, and identifies areas for cross-selling
    • Meets realistic expectations of customers and underwriting
    • Manages change within the account by keeping in close contact with customer management and business partner, reviewing new projects and plans for change
    • Provide effective advice on risk management issues to external customers and internal business partners
    • Provide appropriate training for customers
    • Collaborate with customers and business partners to develop appropriate service plans
    • Market risk engineering products and services
    • Work with the Risk Engineering Team and other departments to consistently maintain technical knowledge and consistently achieve Company Risk Management and Underwriting standards
    • Keep up to date with technical aspects affecting risks e.g., trade processes, legislation, and hazardous materials
    • Develop and implement health, safety, and risk strategies to assist businesses to mitigate risk.

    Qualifications & Experience

    • Relevant diploma/ degree and/or related industry insurance or technical certification in the specific field of expertise.
    • Experience in the assessment of risk, based on what is required by applicable Q2P standards for level 3 or similar qualification.
    • A minimum of 3-years’ experience in the position of Risk Engineer/ Risk Analyst/ Insurance surveyor/ Risk Consultant.

    The Risk Engineer is expected to have already achieved the equivalent of one or more of the following qualifications and/or is studying toward:

    • Technical Degree in Safety Management
    • Technology Degree in Safety Management
    • National Diploma in Safety Management
    • CFPA EU Diploma in Fire Prevention
    • Risk Management
    • Firefighting experience would be advantageous
    • Business Management

    Knowledge

    • Legislation
    • Principles of Fire Prevention and Risk Management
    • Knowledge of how to complete a risk assessment and to identify actual and potential hazards or loss exposures.
    • Can give a definition and simple examples of loss trending.
    • Can explain the purpose of causal loss analysis.
    • Understands the value of company-specific standards and guidelines.
    • Can identify the insurance coverage that is applicable to the engineering service.
    • Has a rudimentary ability to analyze loss data for trending purposes.
    • Can identify basic loss causes that are significant sources of actual and potential loss.
    • Can apply company-specific standards and guidelines to a specific target industry.
    • Understands insurance concepts and coverage issues associated with potential loss.

    Risk Improvement:

    • Knowledge of how to develop risk control plans and management programs to control losses at corporate and local levels.
    • Can identify the basic program elements for prevention.
    • Understands the importance of a customer's safety program.
    • Understands the importance of effective communication with the insured.
    • Understands the role of the risk engineer in the relationship with the insured.
    • Is able to recommend physical and management controls technically appropriate to loss potential.
    • Is able to assess existing management programs.
    • Can monitor the effectiveness of loss prevention programs.
    • Can sell the basic benefits of a loss prevention program to an insured.

    Property Loss Controls:

    • Knowledge of practices, tools, and techniques for assessing loss exposures and recommending solutions for property risks.
    • Can define the basic construction types.
    • Can identify the need for and presence of automatic sprinkler systems.
    • Can define the role of risk engineering in the underwriting process.
    • Can define terms related to property evaluation.
    • Can recommend controls for hazards associated with common ignition sources.
    • Can prepare simple property diagrams to provide underwriters with overall view of risk's exposures.
    • Can evaluate space separations and fire barrier walls for Estimated Maximum Loss (EML).
    • Can evaluate basic emergency plans for reduction of potential property losses.
    • Can produce a loss lesson on technical topics for a segment property hazard and its controls.
    • Can use and produce a basic infrared thermography results report.
    • Can use and produce a basic hydrant flow and pressure test results report.

    Liability Loss Controls

    • Knowledge of practices, tools and techniques for assessing loss exposures and recommending solutions for liability risks.
    • Can identify basic liability concepts and coverages.
    • Can identify product liability exposures.
    • Has a basic understanding of the role and importance of product liability programs.
    • Can identify the basic prevention program elements for premise operations.
    • Can evaluate basic liability exposures for premise operations.
    • Can evaluate basic product liability exposures.

    Language

    • Demonstrate language expertise relative to your customer base
    • Very good command of the English language (proficient preferred)
    • Actively participate in meetings
    • Compose reports with minimal grammatical errors
    • Manage ambiguity

    Skills

    • Computer skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Paint, Google earth)
    • Interpersonal skills.
    • Presentation skills
    • Act with integrity, confidence, and accountability
    • Cross Selling - Assesses information that can be obtained during a customer interaction to facilitate cross-selling of Bryte and Risk Engineering Products and Services.
