    Senior Economist - ERD

    Brief description

    The main purpose of this position is to conduct climate-related analyses and to support the South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) involvement in the climate-related work of the Group of Twenty (G20) and the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS). The position is ideal for an experienced economist with knowledge of central banking and a keen interest in understanding the implications of rising climate-related risks on the SARB’s price and financial stability mandates. Successful candidates will work closely with senior bank managers in developing South Africa’s G20 programme for 2025 and/or support South Africa’s participation in the NGFS.

    Detailed description

    The successfulcandidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

    • Provide reliable economicand financial analyses on climate-related risks and policy changes that hold implications for the SARB.
    • Support the execution of the SARB’s climate change programme.
    • Develop policy recommendations and assist with policy implementation.
    • Supportsenior staff members intheir local and international engagements such as at the G20 and NGFS, 
    • Assist and provide input related to the project-based performance assessment of team members.
    • Communicate with, and make presentations to, various internal andexternal stakeholders, as requested.
    • Participate actively in knowledge-sharing sessions and mentor junior economists.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    To be considered for this position, candidates must:

    • be in possession of a Master’s degree in Economics or in a related field; and 
    • have a minimum number of years’ work experience in an economic policy or a financial institution as follows: Economist ‒ five years; Senior Economist – eight years.
