Job Description
Purpose: 

• Senior Engineering Manager  is a 2.13.1 appointment in terms of MHSA, to provide technical and people leadership and ensure the provision of efficient and effective engineering services through the co-ordination and management of all engineering activities including but not limited to mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, civil, capital control and procurement.
• The Senior Engineering Manager is also responsible for providing a dedicated focus on maintaining and improving engineering standards and procedures to the Mine in order to reduce operational and business risks and protect the capital assets of the company. The role furthermore supports large capital projects in the Operation to successful implementation.
• The role forms part of the Mine Senior management team, while providing technical, consultancy and advisory support to the leadership teams on mine and all the Engineering disciplines.

Key Responsibilities: 

• Ensure Asset management Plans (AMP) are in place for critical plant & equipment.
• Implementation of the Managed Operations and De beers Corporate Asset Management Strategy.
• Use the De Beers AM Framework to develop the site AM Strategy, AM Plans, Labour needs, legal obligations and training requirements.
• Translate the strategy into the annual technical & people plan as part of the operational planning process.
• Ensure critical Plant and Equipment strategies / tactics are delivering to the defined availability, reliability and cost / operated hour within the lifecycle model and production plan.
• Establish and monitor the cross-functional effectiveness communication structure and escalation processes.
• Establishes and maintains strong relationships with relevant external and internal stakeholders (i.e. relevant regulatory authorities)
• Ensure appropriate Maintenance Strategies are in place.
• Ensure equipment maintenance strategies are operationalized into effective work packages and tactics.  Ensure all work is planned, scheduled, executed and monitored in accordance with Operating Model and all legal appointment/ statutory requirements are executed, including orderly shutdown.
• Ensure transparency in data and metrics - 'one source of the truth'.
• Drive engineering discipline in terms of feedback into the maintenance management system.
• Identify persistent/ chronic issues and imitate a process for resolution.
• Use the data and functional benchmarking to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Ensure all major defects and critical equipment failures are addressed through the Defect Elimination process to prevent recurring failures in accordance with AA standard.
• Provide people leadership within the function by managing workload, assigning tasks and reviewing/recognizing outputs of team members.
• Motivate the team and drive a culture of Reliability and zero breakdowns
• Ensure proper management of all engineering contractors and contracts.
• Provides consistent outstanding behaviour in relation to safety practices with a deep understanding of the importance of safety.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree/B-Tech in Engineering or equivalent.
• Government Certificate of Competency (GCC) – Mines and Works.
• Professional registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) will be advantageous. 

Knowledge and Experience:

• A demonstrated thought leader and considered an accomplished practitioner
• A proven track record and extensive practical experience in a role and context of similar complexity in a relevant discipline.
• At least 10 years practical experience at operating mines.
• Proven track record in an operational role at managerial level.
• Operational Risk Management training.
• Open Pit and Underground mining experience.
• Proven ability in protecting and managing capital assets.
• Track record of success liaising and dealing at senior levels with suppliers, regulatory bodies, community stakeholders, research institutions and industry associations.
• Strong operational experience in the application of Asset Management Principles in capital projects covering a range of commodities.
• Track record of leading ideas generation; translating these into practical initiatives to be implemented and demonstration of successful execution and delivery within capital improvement projects.
• Demonstrated success in project management, particularly managing change and stakeholder engagement in multi-national and multi-functional teams.
• Demonstrated success on business/process improvement projects.
• Valid EB/Code 08 Drivers License.
