    Senior Instrument Technologist

    Location: Sasolburg, Free State Province, South Africa

    Operating Model Entity (OME): Sasolburg Operations

    Sasolburg Operations (SO) is an integrated facility that includes the Sasol One, Sasol Midland and Sasol Bunsen sites responsible for the production of base and performance chemicals. We also produce electricity and other utilities and provide site support services to enable the manufacturing process on all sites.

    ABOUT THE ROLE / PURPOSE OF THE JOB

    Accountable for system and field instrument technical support to Chemicals area by applying theoretical skills and making suggestions and independently implementing solutions to optimize systems with respect to unit operations, modifications, information gathering, data accumulation, basic processing and reporting.

    Use practical & experimental expertise to initiate & scope innovative and pro-active solutions to add value to maintenance and small projects.

    Develop and manage long-term strategies for the Chemicals instrumentation systems.

    FUNCTIONAL OUTPUTS

    •  Ensure that work standards are met according to applicable Sasol specifications, Site procedures and regulatory requirements. Participate in HAZOP reviews, Safety Integrity level rating and ESD/Digital Control Systems (DCS) maintenance representing control engineering as and when required.
    •  Develop suitable technical proposals based on practical and theoretical knowledge.
    • Plan and safely execute work according to work instructions, quality requirements, deadlines, budget and schedules under no supervision.
    • Expert Troubleshooting on technically advanced piece of equipment and addressing problems with equipment/processes.
    • Efficient & effective use of resources to ensure objectives are achieved and work delivered on time, in scope and within budget.
    • Assess technical work of peers and service providers.
    • Able to work on multiple tasks and/or requests with different priorities.
    • Manage complex schedules and communicate possible delays in meeting deadlines.
    • Ensure optimal maintenance & usage of equipment, including maintain appropriate DCS spares and consumables levels.
    • Develop, maintain, and optimize Process Control Systems including operation and maintenance procedures.
    • Develop process control strategies and standards to improve operational efficiency.                     
    • Responsible to interface with IM in regards to the Chemicals process control systems.
    • Ensure compliance to PSM (Process Safety Management).
    • Provide day-to-day troubleshooting assistance for instrumentation and controls to avoid or minimize production upsets and/or downtime.
    • Manage administrative and documentation requirements for tasks such as configuration backups, software revisions, downloading configuration changes, graphics development and modification, and implementing software changes of design.
    • Assisting in training operators on how the control systems function and in diagnosing operating problems.
    • Ensure upkeep of the Control System peripherals and associated equipment in order to support production demand.                                                                                                       

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    Qualifications:

    BSc (Hons)/ M Tech/ B Tech (Eng)
