Senior IT Systems Engineer | Centurion at Ampath

What You Will Do:

As an Senior IT Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining and improving critical infrastructure platforms that support Ampath's operations. You will:

Infrastructure Operations & Support

• Monitor, maintain and support servers, operating systems, virtualisation platforms, storage environments, backup solutions and monitoring tools.
• Respond to infrastructure incidents, alerts and service disruptions, ensuring timely restoration of services.
• Troubleshoot platform, operating system and infrastructure-related issues while collaborating with internal teams and vendors to resolve complex problems.
• Drive operational stability through proactive health checks, performance monitoring and service improvement initiatives.

Server & Platform Administration

• Administer Windows and Linux server environments, ensuring adherence to security, performance and configuration standards.
• Support server provisioning, upgrades, maintenance and lifecycle management activities.
• Maintain platform documentation, configuration records and operational procedures.

Virtualisation, Storage & Backup Management

• Support virtualisation platforms, virtual machines, clusters and related infrastructure services.
• Monitor and manage storage capacity, performance and utilisation to support business growth.
• Oversee backup monitoring, recovery testing and resilience activities, ensuring critical systems remain recoverable and protected.

Infrastructure Monitoring & Security

• Maintain monitoring tools, dashboards and alerting capabilities to improve visibility across infrastructure services.
• Support patch management, platform hardening and vulnerability remediation activities.
• Ensure compliance with security standards, privileged access controls and change management processes.

Change, Project & Vendor Support

• Participate in infrastructure projects, upgrades, migrations and modernisation initiatives.
• Implement approved infrastructure changes while ensuring minimal business disruption.
• Coordinate with vendors, service providers and internal stakeholders to resolve issues and deliver successful project outcomes.

Continuous Improvement & Knowledge Sharing

• Maintain infrastructure documentation, runbooks and operational knowledge repositories.
• Identify opportunities to improve automation, monitoring, reliability, resilience and support processes.
• Contribute to a culture of collaboration, technical excellence and continuous learning within the IT team.

What You Bring

Qualifications Required:

• NQF Level 7 Degree in Information Technology, Computer Systems, Systems Administration, Infrastructure, Computer Science, Information Systems or a related field.
• NQF Level 8 postgraduate qualification advantageous.

Advantageous Certifications

• Microsoft Server, Azure, Windows Server or related infrastructure certification.
• Linux Administration certification.
• Virtualisation platform certification.
• Storage platform certification.
• Backup and Recovery platform certification.
• Cloud Infrastructure certification.
• ITIL Foundation.
• Security+ or infrastructure security certification.
• Vendor-specific infrastructure certifications.

• Healthcare, laboratory or multi-site operational environment training.

Experience Required:

• 5-8 years' experience in IT Systems Engineering, Systems Administration, Infrastructure Operations or Platform Support.
• Experience supporting complex, high-availability, virtualised, business-critical or operationally sensitive infrastructure environments.
• Experience with major incident support, advanced troubleshooting, platform design input, backup/recovery, patching, hardening, lifecycle management and vendor escalation.
