    Senior Lecturer: Cellular Neuroscience (Contract)

    • The Department of Human Biology, a vibrant multidisciplinary department in the Faculty of Health Sciences, is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Cellular Neuroscience within the Division of Cell Biology on a 15-month contract. The Division of Cell Biology is a dynamic and active discipline with particular strength in neuroscience research, encompassing cellular signalling in the nervous system, neurophysiology, neurodevelopment, and the cellular basis of neurological disease. A major responsibility of this position is to convene the Neuroscience and Physiology stream of the BMedSc(Hons) programme, requiring leadership in postgraduate student training in neuroscience. The successful candidate will deliver lectures and practicals in cellular neuroscience, neurophysiology, cell biology and histology to undergraduate MBChB and BSc students, as well as BMedSc(Hons), Master of Neuroscience and other postgraduate students. The Department maintains well-equipped modern neurophysiology, molecular and cell biology laboratories and has strong collaborative links with the UCT Neuroscience Institute (NI).

    Requirements:

    • An academic qualification of a PhD in neuroscience, cellular neuroscience, neurophysiology or a related field.
    • Five years post-PhD research experience in neuroscience.
    • One year of experience convening a postgraduate programme in neuroscience.
    • A proven track record in research publications.
    • Experience in supervising or co-supervising post-graduate students.
    • Experience in management (of staff and/or research projects).
    • Experience in grant writing will be advantageous.

    Responsibilities:

    Teaching

    • Teach appropriate undergraduate and honours courses in cellular neuroscience, neurophysiology, cell biology, histology and physiology to BMedSc(Hons), MBChB and Master of Neuroscience students.
    • Supervise or co-supervise post-graduate students (BMedSc(Hons), MSc and PhD).

    Research

    • Execute research projects in neuroscience and/or cell biology.

    Leadership, management and administration

    • Convene the Neuroscience and Physiology stream of the BMedSc(Hons) programme.
    • Perform leadership, management and administrative functions related to teaching and research at Divisional, Departmental, Faculty and, if needed, University level.

    Social responsiveness

    • Translate research findings into the community, for the benefit of the public, where relevant.
    • Initiate social responsiveness activities.
