Senior Manager - Group Legal Litigation Commercial Legal at MTN

Responsibilities

• The Senior Manager: Litigation will be accountable to achieve amongst others the following key objectives:
• Provide assistance and direction in all litigious matters MTN Group is involved in and for the implementation of its strategy.
• Provide legal opinions, legal advisory and support to the Group on litigation matters, including the provision of guidance and professional advice on litigation matters as may be instructed from time to time. 
• Manage litigation matters against MTN in collaboration with business line management;  
• Lead negotiation meetings with internal and external stakeholders; 
• Provide legal support relating to litigious matters to the commercial legal teams in Operating Companies;
• Support the GM Litigation with appropriate oversight of the group litigation portfolio across all Operating Companies;
• Provide guidance in respect of compliance with applicable legislation and general jurisprudence; 
• Facilitate dispute resolution and settlement processes;  
• Engage and consult with Management, Counsel, attorneys, relevant stakeholders and witnesses where required;
• Co-ordinate and supervise external briefs and pending litigation matters;
• Research of legal developments and amendments to applicable laws and regulations;
• Provide or facilitate training to personnel across the MTN Group on litigation policies and guidelines and managing litigation and disputes and associated risks;
• Support the GM Litigation with the preparation and presentation of all internal reporting to MTN Group governance structures;
• Provide inputs to relevant documentation, including review of and drafting of letters of demand and replies, pleadings, settlement agreements, submissions for reviews, appeals etc;  

Key Deliverables

• Provide effective management of and guidance in respect of litigious matters that MTN Group is involved in in line with the implementation of its strategy.
• Provide support, guidance and advice to MTN Operating Companies, where requested or required, regarding litigation matters and all related transactions, risks and other similar matters.
• Provide support on various aspects of the MTN Group’s litigation activities.

Role Dependencies

• Active support from the GM Litigation 
• Deep understanding of the MTN business strategy 
• Understanding of the OpCo, business and Regulatory context
• Timely decision making and reporting 
• Deep understanding of litigation rules and principles

Qualifications
Education:

• Minimum 4-year Academic Degree with Honours (LLB or equivalent)
• Admission as an attorney or Advocate of the High Court
• Experience in dealing with litigation matters for a multinational company will be advantageous
• MBA / Masters advantageous
• Fluent in English
• Fluency in French will be advantageous

Experience:

• Minimum 5 - 7 years of post-articles Legal Experience at a reputable law firm (local or International) or as part of an in-house counsel team
• Considerable exposure in management of complex litigation matters including litigation across different jurisdictions
• Ability to operate a litigation portfolio independently
• Work across diverse cultures and geographies, particularly in Africa
