What will make you successful in this role?
Matric
Relevant IT degree or diploma will get preference
6+ years working experience developing in Oracle SQL and PL/SQL
Developing and maintaining packages, procedures, functions, views, and other database objects in the Oracle Database
Solid understanding of database architecture
Understanding of software systems used in the development process: Code versioning (SVN), Release management (Crucible & Bamboo) and Issue Tracking (JIRA)
Knowledge and/or working experience of the following will be advantageous:
TIA (The Insurance Application)
Oracle 12c upwards
Oracle Forms
Oracle Reports
Performance tuning (SQL and PL/SQL)
WebLogic integration
Java
Shell scripting
Deliverables include, but will not be limited to:
Plan, design & develop solutions within a team
Conduct or assist with code quality reviews of solutions
Conduct or assist with troubleshooting and debugging of developed solutions in development and production environments
Attend and provide input in team and stakeholder meetings relating to technical and architecture requirements
Conduct internal knowledge sharing sessions on developed solutions and best practises
Contribute towards well documented, quality, tested and reusable code, ensuring development is followed through to completion that is in accordance with team standards and the solution specification
Competencies Required:
Ability to look beyond a problem and not get stuck on the current "process" of how to do things. A senior developer should be able to choose a solution that will be easy to maintain, easy to teach to the rest of the team and easy to debug
Should not be afraid to bounce ideas and solutions off other developers (no matter their experience level)
Understand and use design patterns and principles (such as the SOLID principles)
Comprehensive understanding of the system architecture and be able to make changes to it if needed
Ability to anticipate and identify performance bottlenecks, without spending too much time on over-optimization
Know when to implement different technologies such as queuing, caching, logging and security
Ability to provide various solutions for the same problem, with a detailed explanation of the pros and cons for each proposed solution (be it to business or other developers)
Understanding that languages and frameworks are tools to solve problems with, and subsequently has the ability to pick the right tool and approach for the problem at hand
Readiness to switch between projects seamlessly
Willingness to guide other developers, but also allow them to make their own choices based on the guidance given
Should understand and respect the team dynamics
In-depth understanding of what business is trying to achieve and be able to advise business if a feature is not needed or if it needs to be approached differently
Accountability for the system as a whole, even if you are not actively working on that part(s) of the system
Ability to estimate the scope of a problem confidently and accurately
