    Senior Shift Artisan (Electro-mechanical) - Krugersdorp

    Job Purpose:

    • To plan and supervise the daily maintenance activities of the processing and packing equipment to optimise the availability and reliability of this plant and to maintain a safe working environment. The incumbent will also provide hands on expertise and leadership of maintenance staff to provide preventative maintenance and servicing of equipment and to minimise equipment downtime during breakdowns.

    Minimum Requirements    

    • N6 National Certificate in Engineering
    • Trade tested as Artisan
    • A minimum of 10 years experience fulfilling the requirements of an artisan in the Foods industry with supervisory management training, of which a minimum of 3 years must be at a senior artisan level with experience in fulfilling the requirements of a GMR 2(7) appointment.

    Knowledge and Skill 
    Customer Service:

    • Skills to manage both internal and external customers.

    Computer Skills:

    • Proficiency in the use of MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
    • Working knowledge of a Planned Preventative Maintenance System like Pragma

    Workshops/Meetings:

    • Conduct formal and structured meetings.
    • Facilitate meetings/workshops effectively to achieve organisational outcomes.

    SHERQ

    • Demonstrate an understanding of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental legislation relevant to the food or beverage environment.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of SHE System requirements.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of risk assessment concepts and processes.
    • Demonstrate understanding of a work permit system and a lockout system.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of HACCP principles.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of Quality Control in the Production environment.
    • Demonstrate an understanding of Quality and Food Safety requirements for a Quality Management System

    Engineering:

    • Demonstrate knowledge and operation of mechanical, electrical and control systems.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of the operation and maintenance of mechanical, electrical and control equipment.

    Problem Solving:

    • Demonstrate logical problem solving and root cause analysis techniques.

    Duties & Responsibilities    

    • Lead all maintenance activities on shift through demonstrated electro-mechnical problem solving capabiities to maximise process plant and pie line uptime.
    • Ensure safe work procedures are followed at all times.
    • Maintain all duties and responsibilities as per legal OHSA appointments.  
    • Plan the daily work load to incorporate routine inspections and scheduled maintenance whilst closely managing breakdown maintenance.
    • Drive increased use of tactical maintenance techniques (preventative maintenance).

    Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality (SHERQ)

    • Improve the adherence of the maintenance team to the SHERQ requirements by;
    • ensuring proper use of PPE at all times (audit, document and improve)
    • maintaining housekeeping standards in all areas (audit, document and improve)
    • conducting risk assessments of all your areas of responsibility to reduce the site DIFR and reduce or mitigate risks (document and implement)
    • implementing an equipment lockout process and sustain (audit, document and improve)
    • maintaining access control in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act 
    • ensuring that post-maintenance cleaning is adhered to after work is completed (audit, document and improve)
    • ensuring that all guarding is in place at all times and that all rotating shafts are adequately covered (audit, document and improve)
    • ensuring that all safety inspections are carried out and that adherence to standards is in place (audit, document and improve)
    • ensuring that Planned Job Observations are completed for all Standard Operating Practices (SOP's) and all learnings are used to improve the SOP's
    • thoroughly investigating near-misses, incidents and accidents and prevention work is documented and implemented
    • ensure that all statutory work is undertaken within the prescribed times
    • identifying two 'lead indicators' to improve our SHERQ performance and implement these measures and document to show improvement cycles.

    Plant and work Inspections

    • Set the standard of workmanship.
    • Follow up on tasks completed by team members.
    • Housekeeping of workshop and work areas.
    • Prioritise work and ensure generation and completion of job cards.
    • Ensure food safety rules are complied with and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP’s) are followed in production areas.

    Reliability engineering 

    • Find the root cause of failures and prevent re-ocurrance.
    • To work with production and cleaning colleagues to prevent equipment damage during wash-down cleaning processes by designing best cleaning practices and water ingress prevention mechanisms and to offer the shortest possible process plant and line start-up time after cleaning.
    • Provide technical support to maintenance team.
    • Maintain appropriate levels of equipment and component redundancy for flour handling, dough making, lamination, cooking and product cooling processes and pie line equipment.
    • Identify and maintain appropriate levels of critical spares.
    • Recommend and implement technical changes (engineering standards and specifications)

    Maintenance Planning

    • Work with Engineering Planner and Senior Artisan colleagues to schedule maintenance and repairs based on available resources and within legislated limits of overtime.
    • Assist in planning and executing statutory and regulatory maintenance
    • Allocate Job Cards/Works Orders to the maintenance team and sign-off Job Cards/Works Orders.
    • Maintain and update maintenance plans.
    • Develop and execute maintenance shutdown/outage plans.

    Maintenance Management/Supervision and Auditing 

    • Coordinate and optimise the application of maintenance resources (internal resources, service providers/suppliers and contractors) to reduce engineering downtime.
    • Establish and hold team accountable for the achievement of key maintenance KPI’s and ensure the effective use of the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) system Pragma.
    • Implement and follow-up action plans to address any deviations or KPI shortfalls.
    • Perform routine plant inspections to identify non-conformances and regularly audit Job Cards/Works Orders to ensure that the work has been completed to the required standard. 

    Engineering Spares and Stock Control:

    • Work with Engineering Buyer to monitor critical stock items and determine optimum stock levels for effective servicing of plant and equipment.
    •  Initiate ordering of stock for all parts, equipment and materials required.

    Housekeeping:

    • Maintain approparite housekeeping and safety standards in maintenance offices and workshop

    Design:

    • Design basic mechanical components to suit the environment.

    Equipment protection during assmebly and disassembly:

    • Devise and implement menthods to protect the equipment from regular assembly and disassembly including the use of proper tools.

    Runtime Diagnostics:

    • Diagnose faults on equipment and machinery during production/operation to minimise equipment stoppages.
    • Coach and mentor team to repair faults on equipment and machinery during production/operation time with confidence.

    Continuous Improvement:

    • to improve quality and throughput.
    • supervise team in the delivery of the objectives of a technical project.
    • conduct root cause analysis techniques to impove equipment uptime.

    Industrial Relations:

    • Ensure discipline is maintained in department in as far as absenteeism, time management and overtime is concerned.
    • Resolve disputes before the morale of the team is negatively inlfuenced.

    Work shifts

    • Be on standby
    • Work after hours and on weekends as required.
