Senior Visiting International Research Fellow at HSRC

Job Advert Summary    

• The Research Impact division (RID) plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the Human SciencesResearch Council’s (HSRC) work extends beyond academic outputs to create real and lasting change in society. Our mission is to support, strengthen, and institutionalise the impact of HSRC research by aligning it with South Africa’s development priorities and the broader African and global context. 
• The Research Impact Division comprises five interconnected units, each contributing to ouroverarching goal of translating research into measurable impact: Impact Evaluation; HSRC Press; External Capacity Development and Internship; Strategic Partnerships and Internationalisation; Research Governance, Ethics and Integrity. Together, these units ensure that the HSRC’s research is not only rigorous and relevant, but also transformative in helping to shape a more inclusive, informed, and just society. 
• The division seeks to appoint a suitably qualified Visiting International Research Fellow (Senior). Working in a hybrid manner across the HSRC and hosted by the Strategic Partnerships and Internationalization Unit (SPIU). The fellow will support the SPIU to conceptually and pedagogically shape a portfolio of work on science diplomacy and internationalization and contribute to thought leadership and a set of deliverables on Science Diplomacy.
• Applicants must be a citizen of either an African country other than South Africa, or any other country in the world who is not a South African Citizen or permanent resident in South Africa. It will be the candidate’s responsibility to secure the necessary visa or work permit in accordance with South African Government legislation and procedures.

Minimum Requirements    

• A PhD in a relevant field such as international relations, science and technology policy, public policy, development studies, or a cognate discipline.
• Have at least 7 peer reviewed publications some of them sole or first authored.
• Have a minimum working experience of 10 years in international research cooperation, multilateral diplomacy, or policy engagement at the interface of science and international affairs.
• Be affiliated with a reputable global institution, multilateral or international think tank, with a continuing appointment at their home institution for the period of the fellowship with the HSRC.
• Commitment to producing knowledge products (e.g., working papers, policy briefs, public lectures) as part of their fellowship.

Additional Requirements:

• Excellent professional and academic writing skills.
• High levels of computer literacy, internet, and proficiency in Microsoft Office and online collaboration platforms;
• Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multicultural, and multidisciplinary environment.

Duties & Responsibilities    

• The Fellow will be required to write and co-publish one journal article, one policy brief with the RID, one thought leadership seminar in collaboration with the Science Diplomacy and Internationalization hub and other colleagues working on the thematic area.
• The Fellow will travel to South Africa to contribute to shaping the scope of work on Science Diplomacy and internationalization and to deliver on the Thought leadership seminar.
• The Fellow will be required to visit the HSRC in South Africa at least once during the period of appointment, for a period not less than ten (10) working days, during which period, the Visiting International Research Fellow and their HSRC research counterpart(s) will participate in at least one joint seminar or collaborative workshop that will contribute to the joint deliverables and assignment.
• It is anticipated that the appointed Fellow will also endeavor to create an opportunity for Research Impact Development research outcomes to be applied through collaboration on the continent.
• While the fellowship is a non-remunerated opportunity, the publication, logistical and operational costs shall be covered.
