    Solar PV Design Engineer - MRPIW

    Job description

    The successful candidate will be responsible for, but not be limited to:

    • Size PV strings, tables, arrays, inverters, chargers, fuses and combiner boxes and battery energy storage systems.
    • Develop PV layouts for rooftop and ground mount installations.
    • Size solar cables and other integration cables.
    • Size earth cables and design earth grids.
    • Draft methodologies and method statements.
    • Apply applicable international and national standards to designs and procedures.
    • Conduct simulations using tools such as PVsyst, PVsol, Homer and other design software for PV systems.
    • Calculate fault levels and protection design.
    • Simulate power flows and voltage drops using Software such as Etap, Easy Power.
    • Design trenches and cable tray layouts.
    • Develop Single Line Diagrams and schematics.
    • Provide engineering & design guidance and input throughout the project lifecycle, from inception, through feasibility into construction and commissioning.
    • Develop engineering design reports.
    • Compile BoQ’s and prepare tender documents and project specifications.
    • Adjudicate tenders and recommend preferred suppliers.
    • Observe health and safety legislation and regulations as applied to design, construction and SANS compliance requirements.
    • Participate in multi-disciplinary project teams and interface with other engineering and functional disciplines.
    • Engage, build relationships and earn the trust of key industry stakeholders through a display of personal integrity and professionalism.
    • Identify opportunities to improve processes and systems in order to improve efficiencies and contribute to potential higher margins being achieved on projects.
    • Keep up to date with new products and innovations in the solar PV industry.

    Minimum requirements

    Suitable candidate must possess the following minimum qualifications and skills:

    • National Diploma/BTech/BEng/BSc in Electrical / Mechanical Engineering
    • Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as a candidate

    Work experience:

    • 2 years’ experience working in the renewable energies, process, and utilities industries, including project experience
    • 2 years’ experience with commissioning of renewable energy projects
    • Sound knowledge of Health and Safety, compliance and inspections to authorize COC’s, as well as ensuring work at height permits and other requirements are met
    • A natural, self-motivated and astute ability to self-manage and take responsibility for the company’s technical performance is essential
    • Understanding of Solar PV systems
    • Power simulation software skills
    • Solid knowledge of Solar PV design and implementation
    • Experienced in running projects and teams from inception to completion
