Specialist: Air Quality Monitoring at City of Johannesburg

Minimum Requirements:

• Matric/ Grade 12 plus Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Management or Environmental Sciences or Atmospheric Science or Engineering (Instrumentations) or Mathematics or Statistics or Physics or Chemistry (NQF Level 7);
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a Government Environment or Environmental organization or consultancy working in the field of air quality monitoring, modelling, licensing or planning;
• Minimum of Code 8 Driver’s License.

Primary Function:

• To perform air quality monitoring activities in the City’s Air Quality Monitoring network in order to ensure the network operate optimally in accordance with the prescribed air quality methods, norms and standards.

Key Performance Areas:

• Conduct ambient air quality monitoring according to the prescribed Norms and Standards as prescribed in Section 7(1 and 2) and 8(c) of the Air Quality Act.
• Conduct repairs and maintenance on the air quality monitoring instruments to produce accurate, credible, and scientific representable data in the city’s ambient air quality monitoring network;
• Implement maintain view to log data values and determine data quality measurements, such as calibration results.
• Implementing the performance management policy and procedure so that the Department and business unit’s objectives are met.
• Procurement and Contract Management.
• Engage with potential stakeholders to facilitate collaboration with the City of Johannesburg;
• Handling routine research administration.

Leading Competencies:

• Computer Literacy (Word, Excel, Email & PowerPoint), GIS and programming language (R statistical).
• Good written and verbal communication;
• Stakeholder and Project management.

Core Competencies:

• Knowledge and understanding of ambient air quality monitoring, environmental issues and relevant legislations;
• Proven record in the field of ambient air quality monitoring, modelling and planning;
• Understanding of environmental legislation, National Ambient Air Quality Norms and Standards and ISO17025.
