Specialist, Occupational Hygiene at Exxaro Resources

PURPOSE: 

• To identify and control health hazards in the workplace.
• To co-ordinate the Occupational Hygiene function within the Business Unit.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• B Tech Environmental Health (Essential/Minimum)
• Advanced Certificate: Mine Ventilation (Essential/Minimum)
• Int Cert in Mine Environmental Control (Essential/Minimum)
• Certificate First Line Management (Essential/Minimum)

EXPERIENCE: 

• 3-5 years Relevant Occupational health experience in Mining or Industrial environment   (Essential/Minimum)  

REQUIREMENTS: 

• Psychometric Assessment (Essential/Minimum) (To be conducted by Exxaro)
• Certificate of Fitness (Essential/Minimum) (To be conducted by Exxaro)
• SA Institute for Occupational Hygiene's (Essential/Minimum)
• MHSA Section 12(1)(Occ. Hygiene) ( Essential/Minimum )

Duties & Responsibilities    
The incumbent will inter alia be responsible for the following:

Business Performance and Operations

• Conduct workplace surveys and assessments and evaluate situations in the workplace
• Support superiors in assessing risks to health arising from many different factors and refer employees to medical facilities, if required, to ensure employee Hygiene problems are identified and addressed
• Execute occupation Health and Hygiene System implementation and received directives to ensure that all incident data relating to employee health is captured
• Participate in the implementation of training programs to for compliance with Occupational Health and Hygiene Regulations
• Coordinate the execution and reporting of internal and external audits and ensure the implementation of corrective action to minimise occupation and environmental hazards
• Assist with the implementation of Occupational Hygiene procedures
• Manage the impact of non-compliance with Occupational Health and Hygiene procedures on employee health and ultimately, business operations

Compliance, Governance and Assurance  

• Oversee the Occupational Hygiene for underground Mines department operations, inclusive of lamp room and change houses
• Ensure environment conditions are designed to be safe and a system for monitoring is in place (Act 50 of 1991 Regulation 2.16), including ventilation and occupational hygiene engineering systems
• Establish a system to understand and mitigate occupational hygiene and ergonomic hazards Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) Section 12
• Audit individual shafts to ensure compliance to Mine Health and Safety Act, Group guidelines and Mine standards

Customer, Stakeholder and Client Relationship Management

•  Provide support to the customer in the development of Hygiene services framework and processes for central repository management
• Assist in the evaluation of discipline-specific standards, principles and practice to enable planning, design and implementation of safe outcomes that support the business strategy

Safe and Healthy Work Environment

• Maintain and ensure a healthy environment, safe operations and practices, ensuring compliance with all applicable Safety Health and Environmental (SHE) policies and procedures in line with set standards
• Encourage a culture that focuses on safety in all operations

Specialised Support

• Conduct continuous Hygiene inspections and propose improvements where applicable
• Assist in the development and implementation of a personal learning and growth plan to ensure continued development
• Monitor and provide regular feedback to employees responsible for Hygiene in the different divisions to ensure Hygiene objectives and targets are achieved
• Execute responsibilities in a manner that is in accordance to guidelines and standards associated with quality service delivery of Hygiene services
• Deliver responsibilities in a manner that is aligned to the services framework and consistent with customer agreements
