System Engineer at Motorola Solutions

• This role exists initially to strengthen our System Integration Service with a System Engineer experienced in the public safety voice and data applications and solutions suite that are deployed, to satisfy the customer requirements.
• The System Engineer will be the primary technical contact with project management. The System Engineer will be expected to own and deliver the technical solution developed by the pre-sale engineer and liaise with other Motorola solutions engineering peers, SMEs and third party solution providers. The System Engineer will strive to align the technical delivery to the financial objectives of each project.
• The Motorola Solution technical staff values encourage the development of the system engineer to grow based on breadth of experience and performance.
• The System Engineer will be part of a multi-site, multi-national team and will work collaboratively with the Customer and key partners to maintain and deliver the specified technical solution, supporting the Integration Testing and Upgrades of the Hardware and Applications throughout the Implementation.
• The Senior System Engineer is required to work with a multi-discipline, multi-site programme team with responsibility for Design, Integration and Testing as well as supporting Upgrades project throughout the implementation period of a project.
• The main activity will be in our Johannesburg office during the Design and Mobilisation phase of any projects will have occasional/frequent travel to the customer sites within Sub Sahara Africa (SSA). Some travel to customer, supplier and satellite locations may also be required. Motorola Solutions has an Integration Centre in Elgin, Chicago, USA. There may be occasional opportunities to travel to the SI centre dependent on the size and complexity of the customer solution                                         

Main duties:

• Perform detailed design to refine and develop system solutions and services which satisfy the requirements of the customer, end users and operator.
• Undertake the generation of system documentation and equipment lists using relevant tools and processes.
• Undertake design reviews of technical solutions and services with customers, project teams and management.
• Work together with project managers to help drive progress, decisions and manage changes]

Reporting Structure

• All Technical Staff report on a solid line basis to their Regional Engineering Lead.  
• When major project teams are established project team members will report on a dotted line basis to the appointed project team leader to reflect the implementation of these teams but still retain a solid line reporting at a functional level.

• The overall career path is a progression the Technical Staff ladder Levels via one or more of the TS roles. There are opportunities to take advantage of a Lateral move in the organisation where the technical skills built up can be used in a new field such as Project Management or Sales.

Communications

• Close contact with all areas within System Integration
• Continuous liaison with Key Account Managers, Project Managers and Field engineers
• Reporting and presentation of project status to Senior Management and Finance community at project reviews
• Undertake presentations of technical capabilities and solution strategies to influence customers during the pre-pre-sales phase.

Decision Authority

• May lead small / medium projects or portions of larger projects.  Conducts technical needs assessments and requirements gathering. Key contributor to the definition and development of project scope, objectives and detailed plans. Monitor execution throughout the project to ensure all technical obligations are being met and recorded.  Recognizes potential technical risks and takes action or escalates appropriately.  Proposes alternatives to resolution or mitigation.  Liaison between internal teams.  Act as the technical interface into the different departments to ensure that the customer and project requirements are fully understood and actioned. May lead project meeting and reviews.

Basic Requirements

Qualifications

• Degree in electrical engineering gained through a recognised period of study at University, or equivalent education or experience in electrical/electronic engineering. 

Experience

Experience in one or more of the following are required:

• P25 and TETRA Voice and Data Secure Mission Critical Communications Systems
• DMR Two Way Radio Systems

Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:

• IP Networking Solutions
• RF Systems and Solutions
