Technical Assistant at Stellenbosch University

Duties    

• Preparing the greenhouses for trials and daily operations.
• Daily monitoring of tunnels, crops and trials with regular feedback to management.
• Seedling production for trial planting and ensuring alignment with trial protocols.
• Preparing plant nutrient mixtures, managing irrigation and fertilisation schedules, and monitoring nutrient use efficiency for various crops according to specifications provided.
• Compiling fertiliser stock tanks and maintaining an inventory of fertilisers. 
• Scouting crops for pest and diseases and applying pest control agents according to schedule and prevention / incident.
• Managing fertilizer and pesticide inventory, ensuring safe usage and compliance.
• Trellising and pruning crops according to specific requirements.
• Collecting production data.
• Quality assessment and grading products.
• General tidiness and safety of the greenhouse terrain.

Job Requirements    

• Grade 12 / Matric with two years' prior learning experience in hydroponics/horticulture/agronomy.
• Knowledge of production of greenhouse crops, including hydroponic production techniques.
• Knowledge of the safe application of pesticides.
• Good communication and reading skills (in at least Afrikaans and English).
• Good collaboration within the context of a team.
• Basic computer literacy.
• Independent.
• Reliable.
• Organised.
