Technician : Outside Services at Sappi

Sappi Ngodwana Mill requires a Technician for Outside Services to support Outside Services and Farm Operations Superintendents in water, effluent, sewage treatment and solid waste handling operations.
 

This role reports in to the Production Manager Utilities and Services.

The main responsibilities of the job are:

• Esure the business objectives are executed / achieved in outside services and farm operations sections.

• Participates in relevant forums to facilitate effective communication.
  Recommend maintenance/upgrade/replacement of existing equipment to optimize production efficiency.

• Technical support to environmental performance improvement projects (PIPs).

• Support plant operations to ensure the maximum utilization of the resources (raw materials, energy, and people).

• Support the execution of production activities (shuts, start-ups, checks, log sheets, graph trends, resources) to sustain quality standards and plant efficiency.

• Assess and manage abnormal plant conditions to ensure plant stability.

• Ensure that daily water, effluent and sewage quality complies to specifications and take the necessary corrective action(s).

• Manage storm water to ensure spills are handled correctly.

• Prepare monthly storm water report for Water Affairs.

• Conduct Farm soil sampling and reporting for SAR mapping.

• Conduct, analyse, and report the solid waste landfill (macro-dump) temperature measurements.

• Control raw materials (calcium hydroxide, gypsum, polymer).

• Review weekly and monthly river and eye flows and formulate report.

• Monitor results of bacteriological counts and take corrective action to assure compliance to standards (standard plate count, Coli and E-Coli).

• Monitor Ngodwana dam water level and pore pressures, flows from drains and movement of embankment as well as a general visual inspection of dam wall and surrounding areas.

• Support personnel and equipment of sewage and water treatment plant and reservoirs.

• Arrange three monthly bore holes samples.

• Arrange environmental audits to be done on the solid waste landfill site.

• Understand the SHEQ requirements of the Section(s).

• Investigate SHEQ incidents and identify root causes of non-conformances and corrects deviations.

• Ensure legal compliance to integrated water use, air emissions and solid waste licenses.

• Maintain good housekeeping in the workplace at all time (5S Standards).

• Ensure BBS observations and near-miss reporting are conducted according to mill objectives.

The ideal candidate should have:

• National Diploma in Environmental Science or BTech/BSc/BEng in Chemical Engineering.
  1-3 years experience within water and/or waste treatment.
