TFC Maintenance Practitioner Instrumentation (Steelpoort) at Samancor Chrome

Purpose Of the Job:

• Ensure safety come first in all aspects. Monitor, improve and repair the control systems and control systems networks according to good engineering practices. Maintain all control system related equipment to ensure minimal production downtime and maximized production while utilizing automation technology to improve safety and efficiency. Do PLC and SCADA development on all control systems.

Safety, Health, Environment & Quality

• Manage SHEQ compliance within the process through effective use of the Toolbox
• Utilise the Information Management System (IMS) to initiate, investigate and report SHEQ status.
• Act as the safety representative and evacuation officer of automation department.
• Issue permits in the automation area if it is required.

Customers

• Understand how the operation works and the effect of control system equipment on its deliverables and the way it operates and vice-a-versa.
• Proactively seek ways of improving equipment reliability, planned maintenance, and control systems in the plant.
• Conduct regular scheduled plant inspections.
• Provide regular feedback with regards to control system changes and to operational and maintenance personnel in plant area.
• Inform operational and maintenance personnel about maintenance activities on control system that effect the plant areas.
• Attend green area meetings on a daily basis.
• Audit SCADA and PLC system for defects on a scheduled basis to identify defects.
• Assist plant instrumentation personnel if required.
• Attend meeting in plant as required. 

Business Processes

Operational:

• Ensure that the SAP PM data and work management always meets Samancor Chrome standards
• Monitor corrective maintenance workload versus available manpower
• Coach and mentor team members on effective plant maintenance management
• Create quality awareness and quality service awareness within the team
• Provide regular feedback to the Plant Maintenance Superintendent
• Compile and submit monthly reports as required.
• Monitor and maintain HQMS procedures.
• Ensure that the automation office is maintained.
• Assist automation planning.
• Order spares and consumables.
• Provide regular feedback to the Automation Superintendent
• Maintain all system within the control system office.

Plant availability:

• Check downtime data, investigate where necessary and take corrective action
• React swiftly to any plant stoppages involving controls system faults.
• Liaise with various departments and sections.
• Accurately file documentation for easy retrieval.
• Compile preventative maintenance schedules on control system equipment.
• Authenticate PLC programs and ensure adequate back up facilities are available.
• Provide advice, training and support to all plant sections with regards to troubleshooting and suspected automation related defects.
• Maintain critical spares list.
• Ensure all control system equipment and backup equipment is available and in good working condition.
• Do development on PLC and SCADA systems.
• Do bridging and bypassing on PLC if required
• Monitor automation networks and correct defects.
• Monitor, maintain and repair control systems.

Plant reliability:

• Implementation of modifications according to procedures.
• Assist to resolve all requirements, concerns and faults within the plant.
• Plan activities required to achieve full operation on all equipment and systems.
• Monitor progress and activity on all systems, both during start up and during operation.
• Monitor data/program integrity.
• Optimise plant/process/control performance.
• Maintain control system according the standard.

Development:

• Assist technician with on the job training on PLC and SCADA development.
• Provide technical advice/assistance to instrumentation technicians.

Stand by:

• Perform senior stand by duties on designated areas from time to time.
• Report any bridging or plant stoppages during call outs immediately to the Engineer on standby.
• Inform the Maintenance Superintendent of any stoppages longer than 2 hours relating to electrical and instrumentation equipment and/or automation systems after hours.
• Provide specialized on-site assistance to electrical and instrumentation stand by personnel if requested or should a call out extend longer than 3 hours.

Cost control:

•  Strive for continuous improvement of processes through implementation of cost effective technology

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications, Experience and Requirements:

• 4 Years relevant experience and Preferably 1 Year Supervisory experience
• Relevant N6 or equivalent.
• Internal candidate needs a relevant N4 studying towards N5 or equivalent.
• Trade Test (Instrumentation).
• Experience on the Siemens and Allen Bradley PLC’s and operating systems is essential
• Should have completed Siemens training
• Rockwell training will be advantageous
• Experience with IT systems and networking is advantageous.
• Knowledge of SAP system will be advantageous
• HR SAP, MES and IMS experience will be advantageous
