    Visuals Journalist

    About the Job

    Reuters Pictures is looking for a dynamic and talented Visuals Journalist to join our team in Cape Town, South Africa to report from one of Africa’s most important countries. 

    We are looking for a team player and a self-starter with plenty of initiative to generate story ideas and inject a creative approach to storytelling. She or He will have a good understanding of the news agenda in the southern Africa region in its widest sense – from politics and religion to sport and entertainment, to culture and new business.  

    The pictures and video news industry is going through a period of significant change, driven by the rapidly changing habits of news consumers and ever-changing technology. The successful candidate should have a strong photographic portfolio and extensive experience in news photography. They should also have basic video and editing skills, as well as a desire and capacity to learn more.  

    We want a journalist with excellent communication skills, an unflappable temperament, and a passion for newsgathering and visual storytelling. They must be able to work closely in a team with visuals colleagues and reporters. 

    Fluent English is necessary to allow the successful candidate to work independently.  

    A commitment to preserving the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles of independence, integrity and freedom from bias is essential. 

    As a Visuals Journalist at Reuters, you will: 

    • React fast to breaking news, willingness to travel on assignments, sometimes at short notice.    

    • Tell in-depth stories around the news, through pictures and video.  

    • Coordinate assignments with multimedia teams  

    • Ensure safety newsgathering protocols are followed. 

    To be our Visuals Journalist, you will likely have: 

    • Sharp eye for visual elements that are needed to make a good pictures and video story. 

    • Basic pictures and video editing. Script writing skills are also welcome. 

    • Thorough understanding of the latest digital visual technologies for photographing, filming, editing, transmitting and sharing. 

    • Proven storytelling skills. 

    It’s preferred but not essential, if you also have: 

    • Experience working in hostile environments 

    • Experience working with multimedia elements
