    Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (1-Year Contact, Renewable up to 3 Years) (Job ID: 6007)

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Assist the disability rights unity in terms of research, administration and other tasks.
    • Work in collaboration with the dean’s office when it comes to research, administration and other tasks.
    • Conduct interdisciplinary research on the relationship between disability rights, human rights and transformation.
    • Collaborate around shared interdisciplinary themes related to disability rights, institutionally, nationally, and internationally.
    • Assist in postgraduate supervision.
    • Participate in teaching in the faculty.
    • Author/co-author at least 3 publication outputs per year in the form of DHET-accredited scholarly journal articles or books/chapters in books.
    • Register and reside as a postdoctoral research fellow at the UFS and participate in relevant activities of the Faculty, the Free State Centre for Human Rights, the School of Postgraduate Studies and the Directorate of Research Development.
    • Prepare and present papers during seminars and other research events.

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Open to all South Africans and foreign nationals for full-time research at the University of the Free State (UFS).
    • Graduated with a doctoral degree in human rights in general and disability rights in particular within the last five years.
    • Successful applicants may not hold full-time salaried employment during the fellowship.
    • Successful applicants must be able to relocate to the UFS for the duration of the fellowship. This is a residential fellowship thus the successful applicant is required to spend 80% of her/his post-doctoral period at the UFS.

    Intern: Sign Language Interpreter (4 Positions) (Contract Appointment :1 Year) Job ID: 6006

    • A detailed curriculum vitae and cover letter. 
    • Copies of qualifications (please provide the SAQA accreditation in the case of foreign qualifications).

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Shadow an experienced South African Sign Language Interpreter to gain exposure to educational interpreting.
    • Attend South African Sign Language Interpreter meetings on campus to get on board with terminology and the role of educational South African Sign Language Interpreters.
    • Enter into a mentorship agreement with an advanced educational South African Sign Language Interpreter.
    • Meet with a mentor on a weekly/biweekly basis to discuss questions regarding shadowing.
    • Work in a team with an advanced South African Sign Language Interpreter after shadowing.
    • Participate in quality control of the South African Sign Language Interpreter service.
    • Attend terminology development workshops to gain exposure to how terminology is developed.
    • Vocabulary collection and terminology development.

    Inherent requirements:

    • An Advanced Diploma / Bachelor's degree on NQF Level 7 in South African Sign Language or a Bachelor’s degree on NQF Level 7 with South African Sign Language as a module up to 3rd-year level (attach academic record).
    • Three (3) years of conversational South African Sign Language experience.

    Recommendations 

    • Honours/Postgraduate Diploma on NQF Level 8 in South African Sign Language (SASL).
    • Basic understanding of SASL interpreting/ interpreting environment.
    • Working understanding of Deaf culture.
    • Working understanding of the interpreters’ code of ethics.

    The following criteria apply to the selection of candidates:

    • The applicant should not currently be participating in an existing learnership/internship programme.
    • The applicant should not have any previous formal work experience.
    • The applicant must be willing to sign a learnership/internship agreement with UFS.
    • The applicant must be available for the period of 1 year to participate in the learnership/internship.

    Social Media Specialist (post level 12) (Contract Appointment: 6 Months) (Job ID: 6010)

    Duties and responsibilities:

    • Generate and disseminate content across various UFS social media platforms, including Facebook, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, Pinterest, Giphy, TikTok, and Instagram.
    • Conceptualise and implement social media campaigns. 
    • Monitor these platforms vigilantly, promptly responding to enquiries, and proactively identifying potential student-related issues.

    Inherent requirements:

    • A bachelor’s degree or an advanced diploma/BTech degree/postgraduate certificate on NQF Level 7 in Journalism/Media/Marketing. 
    • A minimum of one (1) year relevant working experience relating to the duties and responsibilities.

    Recommendations:

    • Knowledge of the social media environment and writing content for social media platforms.
    • Advanced working knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, and the Internet.
    • Basic photography skills. 
    • Basic videography skills.
    • Proven experience in managing social media platforms.
    • Proven experience in the conceptualisation and execution of social media campaigns. 
    • Proficiency in social media management tools (Brandwatch, Sprout Social, Hootsuite, etc.)
    • Demonstrate knowledge of multi-media journalism.
