    Underground Fitter

    The underground Fitter is accountable for the installation and maintenance on Rail Bound Equipment (RBE)related underground infrastructure and fixed plant equipment such as Bulk air coolers, and pipe networks.  The incumbent delivers scheduled and unscheduled tasks as assigned to ensure safe and optimal Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).  A core accountability of the role is to maintain the highest possible safety standards in area of operation and influence.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Grade 12/N3 or equivalent
    • Fitter trade certificate
    • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as a Fitter on Hydraulics / Pneumatic systems and Battery Loco Maintenance in an underground Horizontal Logistics environment
    • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

    Key Competencies:

    • Proven track record in safety leadership
      Proven interpersonal, collaborative and communication skills
    • Independent, proactive thinker and ability to schedule and deliver work within tight deadlines
    • Proficient in maintaining underground pumping/dewatering systems, cooling systems, as well as all relevant safety devices

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Ensure health and safety of self and team members by applying relevant standards and procedures in all planning and execution of maintenance activities
    • Perform inspections in accordance with the Mine Health and Safety Act regulations, and Company standards
    • Contribute to a culture of zero harm by adhering to all requirements as laid down by legislation, health, safety, environmental, security policies, and procedures, and by the application of specific instructions to own work area and task completion
    • Maintenance activities on horizontal equipment includes new era locomotives, skid steer loaders, hydraulic tip infrastructures, hydraulic box front infrastructures, bulk air cooler systems, dirty water dams and pumping assemblies, vertical spindle pumps and pipe network
    • Promote and develop team work to become an affective team member
    • Ensure that condition monitoring of equipment, scheduled and planned maintenance are conducted effectively
    • Timely response to breakdown management, conduct appropriate root cause analysis and diagnosis
    •  Conduct expansions and construction of new equipment or installations as per works order
    • Identify spares requirements and book against the maintenance defect log system
    • Work overtime, standby and be available for callouts should the need arise

    Supervisor Engineering Rigger

    The Supervisor Engineering Rigging is responsible for overseeing all rigging activities in the section or area of responsibility, ensuring strict adherence to the rigging plan, safety protocols, and standard operating procedures. In this capacity, the Supervisor  leads the rigging team in safely executing various tasks such as replacing skips, cages, and ropes, as well as preparing and securing equipment and machinery for use in the underground production sections. The Supervisor is also responsible for all rigging, lifting equipment/tackles, 3 BMR winders and a singly drum winder in a 3000m single drop shaft

     

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Grade 12/N3 or equivalent
    • Rigger Ropesman trade certificate
    • Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a rigger on deep level mines including Shaft and Winding systems
    • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

     

    Key Competencies:

    • Proven track record in safety leadership

    • Manage key performance areas of teams and ensure they are adequately trained to perform their duties
    • Overseeing rigging and heavy lifting work on surface, underground and vertical shaft
    • Manage operational risk with the section or area of responsibility
    • Plan and execute maintenance and repair activities safely and timeously and ensure daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance targets are met
    • Calculate rope capacity and load weight
    • Ensure execution of all functions related to winders and ropes
    • Manage all rigging maintenance related work
    • Ensure ordering of equipment and availability of critical spares
    • Conduct formal Root Cause Failure Assessment (RCFA) to ensure equipment reliability
    • Perform standby duties, attend to call-outs and breakdowns, as required

    Supervisor Engineering Shafts

    The Supervisor Engineering Shafts assumes accountability for the overall safe and efficient operation of the shaft section.  The role leads and controls the shaft operations in accordance with safety standards and procedures to ensure the elimination of production delays and safety risks to personnel and risk of damage to the conveyance

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Grade 12/N3 or equivalent qualification
    • Recognised Trade Test Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical discipline
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a Mine Shaft environment
    • Extensive Conveyor belt operational and maintenance experience
    • Computer literacy, MS Office proficiency
    • Be in possession of a valid drivers’ license (EB)
    • Be declared medically fit for the position and the environment, as determined by the risk based medical examination at the relevant Gold Fields Occupational Health and Safety Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening Test

    Key Competencies:

    • Intermediate operational safety experience with sound appreciation for safety standards and record management
    • Good communication, interpersonal and team leadership skills
    • Proven organisation skills - planning, organising, leading, and controlling 
    • Proven competence in basic rigging and slinging, and working at heights
    • Working knowledge of planned maintenance systems
    • Ability to manage, control and input into the financial budget of the responsible section

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Ensure full compliance to all Shaft and related standards, regulations, and instructions, relevant Codes of Practice, and the escalation process where deviations and non-compliance are observed
    • Over-inspect subordinates in their daily activities to ensure maintenance according to organisational standards and the maintenance requirements
    • Conduct Shaft examination in terms of the Mines Code of Practice and MHSA
    • Perform lockout/tagout and risk assessments as per the Mines COP’s and Procedures
    • Analyse breakdowns of previous shift at the beginning of each shift by evaluating previous corrective measures and allocate resources accordingly
    • Communicate equipment information and changes to relevant stakeholder to minimize production delays
    • Continuously analyse equipment efficiencies to recommend or implementing improvements and changes to maximize equipment utilisation
    • Control magazines, including handling, controlling, receiving, and issuing explosives according to the MHSA and the Mines Standards and Procedures
    • Co-ordinate and monitor equipment availability to ensure adherence to production parameters
    • Ensure the availability of approved mining layouts and production plans
    • Responsible for maintaining water tunnels, declines and change houses where applicable
    • Perform administrative duties to ensure record accuracy and availability, budget compliance and spares availability
    • Coordinate maintenance of the shaft, loading station, bins, shaft bottom and other shaft stations and levels
    • Co-ordinate and supervise all slinging work
    • Ensure safe and effective Railbound tramming and shaft operations
    • Perform all duties relevant to the position, including standby, overtime and callouts

    Trackless Mobile Maintenance Overseer

    The role of the Maintenance Overseer will be responsible for the safe installation and the proper operation, running and maintenance of all TMM infrastructure and TM3 machinery.  The safe erection and proper maintenance of all buildings, structures and tanks in the underground workshops will form part of daily duties.  The effective operational delivery relies extensively on advanced technical capability, intricate planning and scheduling skills, an unwavering drive for collaborative delivery and, exceptional safety leadership experience

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Grade 12 or equivalent
    • Relevant Trade certificate
    • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in a mechanised underground environment, of which 3 years should be on a supervisory level
    • Be declared medically fit for the position and environment, as determined by a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre and pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test, and such other tests as may be required to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment

    Key Competencies:

    • Advanced safety leadership capability with proven safety campaign delivery record
    • Accomplished team and people leader with advanced inter and intra-team collaboration and, sound spoken and written English communication skills
    • Advanced understanding of operational working culture and dealing with operational delivery challenges
    • Advanced practical mining experience with advanced proficiency in operational production planning and work scheduling

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Actively participate in and lead interventions aimed at contributing to a culture of Zero Harm by adhering to and ensuring compliance with specified legislation, SHE policies and procedures and, operational standards, instructions, and governance requirements
    • Actively engage in and demonstrate Visible Felt Leadership aligned to operational SHE standards, operational campaigns and instructions Schedule and conduct regular operational safety, safe work practice and operational delivery inspections ensuring appropriate remediation interventions are executed
    • Maintain effective people management practices by ensuring that team roles and competencies are clearly defined, and that effective team delivery is maintained
    • Coach and guide Front Line Leaders (FLL) to assume and maintain effective and direct leadership accountability over their operational teams in respect of safety management, shift planning, work assignment, planned task observations, etc. and executing remedial measures as required
    • Collaborate with engineering support and planned maintenance teams to establish optimal safe, efficient operation/use of all machinery, equipment, and infrastructure to optimise the mine's O4R (Operating for Reliability) and M4R (Maintain for Reliability) campaigns and, ensure continuous remediation plans are designed, executed, and monitored
    • Participate in collaborative cross-functional team activities to share best practice, drive technical excellence, and enhance sustainable commercial decision making
    • Investigate and analyse operational delivery effectiveness with a view to recommending and developing collaborative and innovative solutions to optimise the interfaces between teams, processes, and systems
    • Contribute toward the development and execution of operational improvement and related projects
    • Manage relationships with key internal Business Partners and external stakeholders, by ensuring broad accountability is maintained against operational delivery, service level, commercial, community and ethical standards.  Ensure the timely resolution of any matters of concern and/or escalate issues in a timely manner
    • Manage and monitor the operational/section financial budget and costs
