About the Role:
The primary role of the Plant Maintenance Engineer is to lead and oversee the engineering department. He/she has to ensure the planning of the maintenance work as well as the execution. The equipment is maintained and in a safe condition as per statutory requirements. The role involves technical application of electrical principles in the Engineering Department.
Location is based in Hammarsdale, KZN.
Key responsibilities
- Ensuring Plant availability of 95%.
- Ensuring safety compliance in terms of OHSACT & assume the GMR 2.1 responsibilities as a “competent person"
- Management of the Engineering Department budgets
- Lead the team of highly skilled artisans as well as nurturing and developing trainees
- Ensure the Preventive Maintenance Program is inline and executed timeously
- Constantly challenging the marketplace for new technology
- Perform regular testing on the earthing protection system and spray dryers’ fire suppression system
- Working with the internal departments for new product development
- Develop documentation for maintenance procedures, to assist trouble shooting.
- Ensure equipment list is kept up to date and calibrated in accordance to the agreed schedule & ensuring that critical spares are available
- Writing up reports, analyzing and upgrading / improvement recommendation for management review
- Provide technical support to production by ensuring that equipment and machinery are well maintained and optimized to achieve cost effectiveness
- Perform daily routine inspections, repairs and preventative maintenance activities of plant equipment
- New Equipment installations
- Working with engineering suppliers and ensuring they have the best service provided
- Maintaining records of maintenance, repair works and subcontractors works
- Safety & Legal responsibility
- Project work as and when required
Qualifications, skills and experience:
- Bachelors’ degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering with at least 4 years’ experience in a Food or Chemical Manufacturing Environment
- GCC Mechanical Engineering Qualification
- Take instructions / communicate in English
- Completed examination in OHS Act
- Knowledge of UPS, diesel engine alternators, electrical circuit breakers, condition monitoring on rotating equipment and thermograph test on electrical connections
- High level knowledge of pumps, gearboxes, steam, boilers, compressors, air handling units, cooling towers, water reticulation systems, valves, hydraulics, pneumatics

About the role
The Millwright is part of a high-performance team, serving as an influential leader and technical resource to optimize plant maintenance, resolve plant problems, and enable safe and efficient production of high-quality products. This role completes preventative and reactive repairs to equipment in the facilities and assists the operations team on day-to-day issues and opportunities related to maintenance, safety, quality, throughput, reliability, and cost.
Key responsibilities
- Work with operations to complete scheduled workday to date.
- Perform preventative maintenance (PPMs) on mechanical equipment according to defined schedules and procedures. PPMs include lubrication, belt changes, measuring wear surfaces, re-torquing equipment, and disassembling equipment for inspections.
- Troubleshoot, diagnose and provide effective repairs to all the components of mechanical equipment (primarily rotating equipment) including pumps, compressors, agitators, drive systems, conveyors, centrifuges, agitators, gearboxes, pacelines, solids handling equipment, etc.
- Develop and utilize procedures to efficiently, effectively and safely diagnose and repair process equipment
- Documents work by completing and turning in needed checklists and procedures. Updates appropriate systems such as SAP with work history information. Provides feedback to planners to continuously improve job plan quality.
- Supports plant roles in procedure usage, creation, reviews, updates, and approvals.
- Utilizes plant information systems to gather data for troubleshooting and streamline tasks for various roles.
- Participates in root cause investigations (RCI) for unplanned events that meet standardized criteria.
- Provide training in responsible area to operations and other maintenance personnel for troubleshooting and mechanical skills.
- Perform basic hand rigging to execute work.
- Work with AC/GK on maintenance schedule.
- Draw correct piping ISO’s for pipe fab
