    Job Description

    Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor in the Department of Sociology and Industrial Sociology (Contract post)

    • The Department of Sociology and Industrial Sociology is looking for suitably qualified candidates to join their team.
    • All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), and engaging in community engagement, recognising differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and faculties.  Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels.
    • In addition, a Professor and an Associate Professor are to provide academic leadership in the following areas: teaching and learning, research and community engagement, and contribute towards the institution's governance. This leadership contribution should be evidenced at the departmental, faculty, and institutional levels.

    The Requirements

    Senior Lecturer

    • A PhD in Sociology or a cognate discipline with specialisation in Development Studies.
    • Teaching experience across a range of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
    • Candidates must have experience in teaching and publishing in the disciplinary areas of Development Studies.
    • Expertise on development theory and practice required, including an understanding of the South African context.
    • Research supervision experience up to at least Master’s degrees to completion is required.
    • Approaches to teaching, learning and research, which encompass engagement with relevant communities.
    • Emerging national profile in the discipline and a credible record of accredited, peer-reviewed publications.
    • Proven track record and an active interest in administration, management and leadership.
    • A proven track record of fundraising, including for student bursaries, is an advantage.

    Associate Professor          

    • A PhD in Sociology or a cognate discipline with specialisation in Development Studies.
    • Considerable teaching experience across a range of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
    • Candidates must have experience in teaching and publishing in the disciplinary areas of Development Studies.
    • Expertise on development theory and practice required, including an understanding of the South African context.
    • Relevant supervision of Master’s degrees to completion is required. Supervising PhD degrees to completion is an advantage.
    • Approaches to teaching, learning and research, which encompass engagement with relevant communities.
    • National and emerging international profile in the discipline and substantial publication record in peer-reviewed publications.
    • Proven track record and an active interest in administration, management and leadership.
    • A proven track record of fundraising, including for student bursaries, is an advantage.

    Professor

    • A PhD in Sociology or a cognate discipline with specialisation in Development Studies.
    • Extensive teaching experience across a range of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels is required.
    • Candidates must have experience in teaching and publishing in the disciplinary areas of Development Studies.
    • Expertise on development theory and practice required, including an understanding of the South African context.
    • Relevant supervision of Master’s and PhD degrees to completion is required.
    • Approaches to teaching, learning and research, which encompass engagement with relevant communities.
    • International profile in the discipline (Very good to outstanding research track record).
    • Proven track record and an active interest in administration, management and leadership.
    • A proven track record of fundraising, including for student bursaries, is an advantage.

    Senior HR Practitioner - 3 Year Contract

    Job Description

    Senior HR Practitioner (Grade 14) 3-year fixed-term contract (may be renewable depending on the availability of funding)

    People and Culture Division

    • The People and Culture Division invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team. 

    Main Objectives

    • As the line manager of the relevant unit, the Senior HR Practitioner and the unit team are required to offer a professional and valued HR service to the relevant Faculties and/or Divisions.
    • Within the Recruitment and Staffing Section, the individual is also expected to contribute to the development of best practices, policies, and processes that enable and drive increased long-term efficiency and effectiveness of staff within the relevant Faculties/Divisions.
    • The HR Officer and the Senior HR Practitioner will operate in a unit. These units are in the Recruitment and Staffing Section. The Recruitment and Staffing section is within the P&C Division.

    The Requirements

    A relevant B. Degree (preferably in Industrial/Organisational Psychology or Human Resources - NQF Level 7) plus approximately 6 years’ relevant experience where such experience includes: -

    • Approximately 6 years of intense recruitment and selection experience at all levels within or for an organisation.  Experience using recruitment software will be a distinct advantage.
    • Some experience in most, if not all, areas of HR (for example, HR Administration, Industrial Relations, Training and Development, Remuneration, Performance Management, HR IT systems, and Well-being).
    • At least one year of management experience or have an accredited management Development Program Certificate of Competence at the NQF level 7.
    • Must have used and/or be familiar with HR information technology systems.
    • Assisting with the development of structures, systems, and processes to ensure service delivery of a high quality that is valued by others.
    • At least 24 months of experience in a pressurised, complex, and high-volume people management environment, dealing with a large staff complement (minimum of 500 employees).
    • Previous experience within the Higher Education sector will be an advantage.
