    Financial Analyst

    This role

    • The Financial Analyst will work directly with PayJoy South Africa's data warehouse to build, maintain, and improve the reporting that underpins the accounting function. The role bridges raw transactional and portfolio data with the financial statements, working closely with accounting, financial reporting, and audit stakeholders to ensure that reports are accurate, well-controlled, and delivered on time. This is a hands-on analytical role requiring strong SQL/Python skills and a working understanding of accounting and lending concepts (e.g. amortisation, depreciation, charge-offs, provisioning).

    Responsibilities

    • Extract, clean, and transform data from the company's data warehouse (via Hex, SQL, and Python) to produce recurring and ad hoc reports for the accounting and finance teams.
    • Build and maintain reports that directly support month-end and year-end close, including portfolio roll-forwards, charge-off and write-off analysis, and provisioning/impairment schedules.
    • Support depreciation and amortisation modelling for financed devices, including EIR (effective interest rate) calculations and reconciliation to accounting records.
    • Assist with preparation of schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external audits, ensuring data lineage and calculations can be clearly explained and reproduced.
    • Reconcile data warehouse outputs to the general ledger and investigate/resolve discrepancies in collaboration with the accounting team.
    • Develop and maintain dashboards and automated reporting pipelines (Hex/Python) to reduce manual effort and improve accuracy and consistency of recurring reports.
    • Document data sources, definitions, and report logic so that reports are auditable, repeatable, and understandable to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Support portfolio analytics, including delinquency, MAU (monthly active user), and other KPI reporting used by finance and management.
    • Respond to ad hoc data and analysis requests from accounting, FP&A, and management with accurate, well-documented outputs.
    • Flag data quality issues in the warehouse and work with data/engineering teams to get them corrected at source.

    Requirements

    • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Data Science, Statistics, or a related quantitative field.
    • 1-3 years of experience in a financial analysis, reporting, or accounting-support role, ideally within financial services, fintech, or a data-intensive environment.
    • Working knowledge of basic financial and accounting concepts (accruals, amortisation, depreciation, provisioning/impairment, reconciliations).
    • Exposure to lending, credit, or asset-financing businesses is an advantage but not essential.
    • Proficient in SQL for querying and manipulating data in a warehouse environment.
    • Working proficiency in Python for data analysis (e.g. pandas) and report automation.
    • Experience with Excel for financial modelling and analysis (formulas, pivot tables; VBA is a plus).
    • Experience with Hex, or similar notebook/BI tools (e.g. Looker, Power BI, Tableau), is an advantage.
    • Comfortable working with large, sometimes imperfect datasets, and able to reconcile data across systems.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a methodical approach to investigating discrepancies.
    • High attention to detail and accuracy, particularly given the reports feed into audited financial statements.
    • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical/data concepts simply to accounting and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Strong personal organisation, able to manage multiple deliverables and meet month-end/audit deadlines.
    • A collaborative, ownership-driven mindset, comfortable working across finance, accounting, and data/engineering teams.
    • Accounting team – primary internal customer for recurring reports and audit support.
    • Finance/FP&A team – collaboration on forecasting, portfolio analytics, and management reporting.
    • Data/engineering team – escalation point for data quality and warehouse issues.
    • External auditors – as a source of supporting schedules and explanations during audit cycles (via the accounting team)
