    Mining Project Manager

    As the successful candidate, you will:

    Lead Mining projects typically comprised, but not limited to:

    • Mine design and planning
    • Open Pit Mines
    • Underground Mines, with specific reference to mass mining methods
    • Equipment Selection
    • Manpower Requirements
    • Capex
    • Opex
    • Business Case, etc.

    Mine Infrastructure design and engineering, including:

    • Mine Access, including declines and/or shafts
    • Headgears
    • Bulk Materials Handling and logistics: surface and underground
    • Backfill
    • Ventilation
    • Refrigeration and Cooling/Heating, etc.
    • Manage Hatch’s business interests to include:
    • The prime contract
    • Revenues
    • Receivables
    • Project Viability and profitability
    • Manage project delivery process to meet owner’s goals, objectives, and expectations
    • Resolve problems and coordinate final handover to the client
    • Be responsible for growth and business development within mining sector in Africa, Europe and Middle East
    • Develop a multicultural network across the region to build relationships with key clients
    • Develop internal networks within Hatch globally to deliver “best value” outcomes for clients
    • Provide specialist advisory support to clients and project teams working on mining operations and projects
    • Conduct regular project progress and client meetings to review the progress and manage issues arising in all project disciplines.
    • Acting as a mentor for the implementation of Hatch safety standards to contractors.
    • Develop and obtain sign-off from client on Project Execution Plan (PEP) and Client’s Requirement Specification on specific projects.
    • Provide leadership to the project and create a highly committed and aligned team environment with all who can influence the project’s outcomes.

    You bring to the role:

    • At least 15 years mining experience, covering both production and project environments
    • Ability to work on international assignments
    • Ability to work with a broad base of clients
    • Excellent interpersonal skills essential
    • Experience in Mass Mining projects is crucial
    • Experience in Block Caving is crucial
    • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering
    • Qualification in Project Management will be advantageous
    • Mine Managers Certificate of Competency will be advantageous
    • Professional Registered Mining Engineer with ECSA will be advantageous
    • An understanding of mine planning software packages (Deswik, Studio 5D, Mine2-4D, Xpac, Surpac, Datamine or Whittle)
    • MS Office computer literacy
    • Excellent report writing ability in English
    • Understanding of financial modelling principles
    • Be able to demonstrate effective negotiation and conflict management skills
    • Willingness and ability to travel as work requires across the Africa, Europe and Middle East region
    • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and integrated team environment

    Engineering Manager

    • The Engineering Manager is responsible for engineering and design matters on the project and assists the Project Manager. The Engineering Manager on a project is responsible for scope definition and manages the planning, resourcing and scheduling of all engineering related activities. In addition, the Engineering Manager provides technical leadership, integrates the disciplines and resolves issues.
    • The Engineering Manager is responsible for engineering systems and the delivery of all technical deliverables to achieve the project objectives within the specified timeframe and budget. The Engineering Manager reports to the Project Manager and provides ultimate direction to Area Engineers and Discipline Engineers on engineering related matters.

    As the successful candidate you will have:

    Key Responsibilities

    • Contribute to the development of the Project Execution Plan (PEP) together with the project leadership team (including procurement, project controls, construction, and commissioning), and allocate roles and responsibilities.
    • Ensure the scope of work is developed and an effective change management system is in place.
    • Develop the engineering budget to meet the scope and execution plan for the project.
    • Develop the engineering work packages (EWPs) for all deliverables and time-based functions.
    • Develop an achievable engineering schedule to meet project requirements using the EWPs.
    • Develop the engineering manpower plan to meet the engineering schedule with the Project Manager.
    • Review and approve the project’s facility description document which describes the scope of the facilities.
    • Provide input into the project monthly report with respect to design progress, cost and issues of concern and recommend changes if required to achieve overall objectives.
    • Coordinate with Procurement, Construction and Commissioning personnel early in the design effort to obtain their input and conduct any necessary reviews.
    • Make contact with client management at key points throughout project to ensure that engineering deliverables are meeting client requirements.
    • Regularly review and appraise the structure of the engineering project team in terms of its ability to meet short- and long-term objectives, and institute appropriate changes.
    • Ensure that training is planned, budgeted and implemented for resources assigned to the project.
    • Assume responsibility for the engineering administrative function, directing Area Engineers, Discipline Engineers and other groups engaged in inter-related engineering responsibilities.
    • Direct and review the engineering activities to ensure that work quality is satisfactory and appropriate technical personnel development programs are conducted.
    • Raise safety awareness and ensure the design for safety principles are applied to the project.
    • Ensure engineering risk assessments and HAZOPs are carried out and all identified issues are addressed.
    • Arrange and facilitate design reviews and participate as required in engineering, management and construction reviews.
    • Coordinate quality audit verifications to ensure compliance with all relevant engineering standards and internal procedures for all design activities. Instigate corrective actions as required.
    • Cooperate with the Global Engineering practice of other Regions as directed on matters involving sharing of available expertise.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • BSc/BEng degree in an engineering discipline.
    • Registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA.
    • Typically 15 years’ experience in a multi-disciplinary environment on major projects with specific focus on mining and processing.
    • Typically 5 years’ experience in managing design engineering teams working on major projects.
    • An extensive technical knowledge of engineering systems, design, applications of engineering processes and materials, and engineering applications of current engineering technologies.
    • General knowledge of industry, regulatory standards and design criteria in engineering disciplines.
    • Ability to plan, coordinate and organise at an advanced level.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of project planning, controls and understanding of multi-discipline interdependencies.
    • Knowledge of drawing production and document control methodologies.
    • Knowledge of progress assessment and measurement and engineering control strategies.
    • Ability to adapt to constant change and accommodate high pressure situations to support the team in meeting project objectives.
    • An extensive knowledge of administrative practices and strong communication skills across all levels including client representatives.
    • Ability to manage relationships with key stakeholders involved in the project (including internal and external clients).
    • A high degree of understanding of procurement and contracting, construction and commissioning methodologies as related to the discipline.

    Senior Geotechnical Engineer - JHB

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead advanced geotechnical studies with the delivery of project requirements as they relate to scope
    • Perform conceptual and detailed geotechnical engineering design
    • Participate in scoping requirements for proposals
    • Grow and lead the local geotechnical discipline in the Africa, Europe, Middle East, India and Russia region
    • Participate in and contribute to design reviews
    • Provide and/or coordinate training for resources assigned to projects
    • Prepare and/or review project procedures, standard specifications and design criteria
    • Review and evaluate technical work prepared by junior engineers, intermediate engineers, designers, technicians and technologists

    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited university
    • Post-graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering is considered an asset
    • Registered as a Professional Engineer
    • 10+ years’ experience in relevant geotechnical field
    • Experience in seismic design is considered an asset
    • Experience with working on projects in a multi-disciplinary environment
    • Sound understanding of design engineering codes and technical standards
    • Strong written skills to prepare reports, proposals and other project deliverables
    • Good communication and interpersonal skills
    • Good planning and organizational skills
    • Ability to function without supervision
    • Good safety awareness
