    Head Of Haematology

    • The purpose of this position is to lead, consolidate and manage in the Department of Medicine/ Haematology within the context of South Africa, the African continent and internationally.
    • This includes service provision, teaching, training and research and social responsiveness. The Head of Division must develop a strategic and operational plan for the division in consultation with the Head of Department, Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) Dean and Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) CEO.
    • The essence of headship is to give academic and clinical leadership to the division, to be committed to its service platforms, scholarship, teaching, and standards, to develop its staff, and to maintain it as a well-functioning academic and clinical unit.
    • The Head will represent the interests of the Department through participating in senior Faculty and Hospital structures and ensure implementation of all the relevant policies and procedures across the Department.

    Lecturer: Critical Minerals and Sustainability (nGAP)

    • The University of Cape Town has a strong international reputation in geological and geochemical research and teaching. The Department of Geological Sciences has historic strengths in analytical geochemistry, petrology and mineralogy.
    • Current areas of research interest include the geochemistry, mineral chemistry and texture of rocks and diamonds from the Earth’s mantle, the petrology of igneous rocks from the continents and oceans, metamorphic petrology and crustal evolution and economic geology particularly applied to mineral deposits formed in igneous and metamorphic rocks.
    • The department operates a large number of advanced analytical facilities (and supporting laboratories) including; an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer; an electron probe microanalyser; multiple quadrupole, single and multicollector plasma mass spectrometers suitable for elemental and radiogenic isotope analysis and geochronology; and extraction lines and gas source mass spectrometers for the analysis of stable isotope ratios of oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and sulphur.
    • The Department also has strong collaborative links with the Centre for Minerals Research and the Department of Chemical Engineering.
    • Under the auspices of the New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) funded by the Department of Higher Education (DHET), the Department of Geological Sciences is seeking to appoint a Lecturer for a full-time permanent position in the field of Critical Minerals and Sustainability.
    • In this context, “critical minerals” pertains to minerals and elements (and the deposits from which they are sourced) essential for non-fossil-fuelbased energy systems, carbon dioxide sequestration and/or high-technology applications, with the goal of supporting the just transition to a sustainable economy based on renewable energy sources.

    Research Nurse (2X Posts)

    Requirements:

    • General Diploma or Degree in Nursing
    • SANC registration as a Professional/Registered Nurse
    • 2+ years general nursing experience, post community service
    • Previous experience working with HIV and Tuberculosis (TB) infected patients
    • Advanced experience in phlebotomy
    • Computer literacy
    • Knowledge on GCP reflected in application
    • Research Nurse experience and proficiency with Redcap in a research setting would be advantageous.

    Responsibilities:

    • Performing clinical procedures such as phlebotomy

    • Assisting with pharmacokinetic study sampling

    • Administering study medication and documentation of administration and adherence counselling as required
    • Liaise with study pharmacist regarding study drug administration as needed.

    • Completing and performing quality control of case report forms (CRFs)
    • Liaise with research team regarding study protocols
    • Sample collection, conducting ECG’s and Spirometry
    • Daily quality assurance and maintenance of good infection control policies

    Senior Research Scientist: Medicinal Chemistry

    Requirements for the job:

    • Minimum BSc (Hons) in organic chemistry/medicinal chemistry or equivalent qualification
    • At least 3 years of industrial or academic hands-on lab experience in synthetic organic chemistry and/or medicinal chemistry
    • At least 1 year experience in working in a disease-related project
    • Up to date on laboratory technologies and strong bench experience in synthetic organic chemistry, incl. multi-step syntheses and multi-gram syntheses, and characterization (NMR, LC/MS etc) of organic compounds

    Advantages:

    • Demonstrated use of fundamental concepts of drug discovery, e.g. SAR analysis, DMPK etc will be advantageous.
    • Ability to write effectively for patent and scientific publications will be advantageous.
    • Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Independently troubleshoot synthesis issues, synthesize, and deliver bioactive compounds to reach the project goals.
    • Periodically present results to supervisor and/or drug discovery team
    • Provide basic data analysis and assistance in compound design
    • Comply with standard operating procedures for laboratory safety, use of instruments, and data management

    • Post graduate degree at NQF level 8 in adult learning or equivalent.

    Innovation Commercialization Manager

    Requirements:

    Chief Scientific Officer

    • The Department of Mechanical Engineering seeks to appoint a full-time position on a three-year fixed-term contract. While the position is fixed-term, it is performance-based, with performance reviewed annually. The successful candidate is expected to commence duties as soon as possible.
    • The incumbent must be an energetic, driven and self-starting individual. The incumbent will report directly to the Principal Investigator of the project and the Departmental Manager. As a successful candidate, you will support the development of an advanced testing device (a hydraulic fluid screener) for an external industrial client.

    Requirements for the position:

    • NQF level 7 (or equivalent for qualifications from outside of SA) with five years’ experience in Mechanical and/or Mechatronics Engineering; and
    • Must have experience in thermofluid systems, hydraulic fluids and material failure; and
    • Must have experience with product design and prototype fabrication; and
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, planning and organising skills.

    Advantageous:

    • A relevant NQF level 8 or higher (or equivalent for qualifications from outside SA).
