Lulalend is a FinTech company with a belief in the power of small business, making a difference, building a better solution and striving for excellence. We work hard to empower businesses across South Africa with the funds they need to grow. Lulalend offers small business funding of between R20 000 - R250 000 to businesses that have been in operation for ...
OVERALL PURPOSE
- This is an individual contributor role designed to find, build, and unlock Lula’s next frontier of growth. The internal job title for this role is VP, Business Development.
- Having spent the last 11 years helping South African SMEs solve cash flow problems, we are now looking for a strategic seller to drive our next phase of 100% year-on-year growth.
- You won't be managing a large team or sitting back on established playbooks. Instead, you will operate as a commercial operator, an equal parts strategic thinker and hands-on dealmaker.
- You will test unproven markets, pitch early-stage product concepts while they are actively being built, negotiate complex commercial terms, and bridge external opportunities directly with our internal Product and Risk teams.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Opportunity Identification & Prioritisation
- Continuously scan the fintech landscape for untapped markets, non-obvious segments, and high-leverage partnership opportunities.
- Build and maintain a rigorous pipeline of strategic opportunities while balancing high-potential ideas with actionable revenue paths.
- Develop crisp hypotheses on where Lula's next wave of growth lives, pressure-testing them with real market signals.
- Size opportunities (addressable market, revenue potential, operational complexity) and prioritise ruthlessly.
Partner Sourcing & Deal Execution (Hands-on Sales)
- Personally identify, approach, and engage C-suite and senior stakeholders across target partners.
- Lead the end-to-end commercial cycle as an individual contributor: from cold outreach and discovery to complex negotiations and close.
- Structure innovative commercial terms that drive high-margin revenue and real business value, not just PR logos.
- Navigate regulatory, product, credit, and risk constraints collaboratively to get complex deals over the finish line.
New Initiatives & 0-to-1 Validation (Selling While Building)
- Drive the discovery and early commercial validation of brand-new growth bets, products, and channels.
- Sell and pilot early-stage concepts/MVPs live in the market, taking customer and partner feedback straight back to Product.
- Translate ambiguous, broad concepts into concrete commercial execution plans.
- Test fast, kill weak ideas early without sentiment, and double down aggressively on what demonstrates traction.
Partner & Channel Performance Management
- Maintain total ownership of key partnerships and channels post-deal to ensure long-term, scalable value.
- Track deep commercial metrics (origination volume, revenue, CAC, unit economics, conversion rates) and rapidly fix drop-offs.
- Work collaboratively with partner teams to actively drive yield and growth by not only maintaining static relationships.
- Intervene immediately when initiatives underperform to pivot tactics or restructure terms.
Cross-functional Leadership & Execution
- Work shoulder-to-shoulder with internal Product, Credit, Risk, and Operations teams to build, launch, and scale initiatives.
- Serve as the agile bridge between external commercial opportunities and internal execution constraints.
- Push internal workflows constructively, ensuring key initiatives maintain momentum and never stall post-signature.
- Ensure signed deals translate into live, operational revenue drivers.
Commercial & Strategic Input
- Provide sharp commercial insight to executive leadership during strategic growth planning cycles.
- Formulate clear business cases and ROI models for unproven market entry strategies.
- Maintain a deep, intuitive pulse on fintech trends, competitive shifts, regulatory changes, and partner landscapes.
- Challenge existing assumptions, introduce creative deal structures, and surface new growth angles.
Reporting & Accountability
- Take total, direct ownership of ambitious growth and revenue targets as an individual contributor.
- Maintain clear reporting on pipeline health, pilot traction, and live initiative performance.
- Foster a fast, tight feedback loop between market reality, product evolution, and strategic results.
- Own outcomes completely by measuring success by deployed revenue and growth, not activity.
THE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- A relevant tertiary degree (Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering, or similar quantitative field).
5+ years of hands-on experience in high-growth environments across:
- Strategic Business Development / Commercial Partnerships
- Management Consulting / Tech Strategy
- Venture Building / Early-stage Start-up Growth
- Product Management with direct commercial & P&L ownership
Proven Track Record of Individual Execution:

- Direct experience pitching, negotiating, and closing complex, long-cycle partnerships.
- Personal accountability for carrying and hitting direct revenue or growth metrics.
Fintech & Financial Services Exposure:
- Demonstrated understanding of SME lending, B2B fintech, embedded finance, or broader financial services context in South Africa.

ROLE PURPOSE
- We are building a small, focused innovation pod inside a fintech scale-up. The pod's job is to turn high-value ideas into production-ready capabilities quickly, then hand them to the teams who run them.
- That only works if the path to production is solid. This role owns it: the pipelines, the environments, the deployment safety, and the observability to know something is wrong before the business does.
- You will have senior platform and data engineering support around you, a pod lead, a senior colleague covering the platform and data seat, and a dedicated Data Engineering function to work with directly.
- This is an early position with real influence over how the pod's operational foundations are built. You will shape the implementation; the pod's direction is set collaboratively with the lead.
- If you like being the person who makes fast delivery safe, rather than the person who slows it down to achieve the same thing then this is the role for you.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines for rapid, safe deployment
- Own the infrastructure layer on Azure: environments, configuration, secrets, networking
- Manage containerised workloads using Docker and Azure managed services
- Set up and maintain observability — logging, metrics, alerting — and use it to diagnose real production issues
- Execute database and schema migrations safely, with rollback paths that actually work
- Work alongside our Data Engineering function on the data platform the pod builds against
- Document what you build so production teams can inherit it
THE SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- 3-5 years of experience in a similar role
- Production experience owning CI/CD pipelines end-to-end
- Hands-on with Docker and Azure managed services
- Practical observability skills; diagnosing live issues, not just standing up dashboards
- Experience running database or schema migrations in production, including when they go wrong
- Comfortable in a small team without a large platform function behind you
Advantageous:
- Infrastructure as Code: Terraform, Pulumi or Bicep
- Fintech or other regulated-environment experience
- Exposure to modern data tooling such as dbt or Snowflake
- Interest in agentic or AI-assisted development workflows
- A habit of documenting decisions: ADRs, runbooks, incident write-ups

Key Responsibilities:
- High-Volume Conversion: Efficiently process and respond to business funding applications to meet and exceed monthly disbursement targets.
- Technical Application Analysis: Accurately interpret business bank data and financial metrics to determine which applications meet the criteria for Credit Risk assessment.
- Exposure Scaling: Proactively identify existing clients within the R10k–R500k bracket who qualify for higher credit limits or increased capital exposure based on their repayment history and financial performance.
- Information Disclosure: Provide clear and accurate information regarding Lula’s funding products, pricing, and terms, ensuring clients are fully informed to make their own business decisions.
- Retention Management: Maintain a dedicated portfolio of repeat funding clients, fostering long-term trust through consistent service excellence and timely communication.
- Pipeline Accuracy: Maintain a rigorous, data-led sales pipeline, providing leadership with factual reporting on status, forecasts, and conversion rates.

- Proven ability to drive the sales process from initial inquiry to final disbursement, ensuring favorable outcomes for both the client and Lula.

- Deep understanding of the mechanics of all funding products to provide comprehensive product information.
- Maintaining high activity levels and precision within a fast-paced, high-pressure fintech environment.

OVERALL PURPOSE
- We are building a small innovation pod that converts high-value ideas into production-ready capabilities fast. You will be the person who makes those capabilities believable, through interfaces that feel polished, trustworthy, and real from day one.
- You will own the full frontend surface, working from intent rather than detailed specs, and make independent judgement calls about when something is ready to put in front of stakeholders. There is no senior colleague to escalate to — this is your domain.
- The trade-off is real autonomy, a small high-trust team, and the opportunity to work at the frontier of AI-native development where your output velocity will be unlike anything in a conventional engineering environment. In exchange, you gain genuine autonomy, a position on a small, high-trust team, and a unique chance to pioneer AI-native development.
- Your output velocity in this environment will far surpass what is possible in conventional engineering roles.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Rapidly build and iterate on interfaces that surface backend capabilities
- Produce production-credible demos — polished enough to build trust, honest enough to be real
- Maintain a shared design system and reusable UI primitives for the pod
- Implement interaction quality: loading states, error handling, feedback loops
- Integrate directly with APIs built by the backend lead
- Use AI tooling (Cursor, v0, or equivalent) as a core part of your workflow
- Contribute to decisions about when a demo is ready for stakeholder exposure
THE EXPERIENCE WE’RE LOOKING FOR
- Senior-level frontend engineering judgment — able to own a full UI surface independently
- Production experience with a modern component framework (React preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to produce polished, production-credible UIs quickly
- Active use of AI-assisted development tooling
- Comfortable working from intent rather than detailed specifications
- Clear instinct for when polish matters and when it does not
Advantageous:
- Experience building internal tools, dashboards, or workflow UIs
- Has worked in a small team or startup environment
- Familiarity with design systems or component library maintenance
- Experience in fintech or regulated industries
