    Assistant: Handyman Rigger 1

    • We’re on the lookout for an experienced Assistant Handyman: Rigger to assist the Rigger and Handyman Rigger in performing rigging and related tasks.

    As an Assistant Handyman: Rigger, you will be responsible for:

    • Loads rigging equipment onto a trolley and conveys it to the place of work or returns it to the rigging store
    • Selects the correct lifting tackle and lifting equipment under instruction from the Rigger, Handyman Rigger, or Foreman
    • Passes chain blocks, slings, and jacks to the Rigger, handyman Rigger or Foreman, places the items instructed by the Rigger, Handyman Rigger, or Foreman
    • Collects spares and items from stores using the trolley or forklift
    • Assists in the manual work of rigging
    • Removal and installation of heavy equipment under the supervision of the Rigger, Handyman, or Foreman
    • Reports any possible safety problems to the Rigger, handyman Rigger, or Foreman
    • Maintains rigging store in a neat and tidy manner

    Management Forester Harvesting - Inkwazi

    We are hiring!

    • We’re on the lookout for an experienced Management Forester to plan, execute & achieve the operational estate management, harvesting objectives & targets for fibre production within resource & SHEQ parameters to ensure a sustainable and low cost fibre supply to Sappi mills and external customers.

    As a Management Forester, you will be responsible for:

    • Build, maintain and reinforce a “predict and prevent” safety culture in all integrated operations
    • Inspect operations regularly to identify risks & ensure that timeous action (blanking & pest control, coppice management) is undertaken.
    • Plan & conduct regular field inspections to ensure that crops, through the timing of operations (weed control, pest & disease management), achieve maximum yields within cost constraints.
    • Ensure that plantations use the Fire Risk Management System (FRMS) to identify risks. Record & implement fire control procedures in order to ensure the effective protection of people, plantations and other assets from forest fires.
    • Develop a tactical plan & ensure that the annual plan of operations for both commercial and open areas comply with standards and service level agreements
    • Develop a pre-harvest plan per compartment in collaboration with the Contractor and Silviculture.
    • Conduct a risk assessment per compartment in order to mitigate potential risks.
    • Ensure that the Harvesting budget is managed effectively by ensuring sales target tons/per day is achieved.
    • Compile in conjunction with Roads Engineer, annual tactical road maintenance plan.
    • Scheduling of short-haul and loading operations to ensure rail/road transport is released on time.
    • Ensure that company assets such as buildings, villages and company houses are maintained and managed effectively according to set standards (hygiene & legal compliance) and within budget constraints.
    • Ensure that relations with communities, other internal and external stakeholders are effectively maintained and managed in order to ensure company image is upheld, risks mitigated and relationships enhanced.

    Management Forester - Khulisa 1

    We are hiring!

    • We're on the lookout for an experienced Management Forester Khulisa based in Manguzi to build grower’s capacity and capabilities to plan, execute & achieve the operational forestry management, harvesting objectives & targets for fibre production within resource & safety parameters to ensure a sustainable fibre supply to Sappi mills and profits to grow.

    As a Management Forester (Khulisa), you will be responsible for:

    • Assist the grower to plan the annual re-establishment program (planting & coppice regeneration), on Forcelink or microforests using TUP and the reestablishment plan provided by the Planning department and place plants order with Nurseries, and execute to achieve Temporary Unplanted targets within budget constraints
    • Assist the grower/contractor to ensure maximum stocking within silvicultural standards is achieved on all reestablishment operations to optimize harvesting timber yields and profits for the growers
    • Assist the grower to put in place a service level agreement with a contractor to ensure all operations comply with Sappi’s silviculture BOP and the grower/service provider is held to account for any poor quality work done. 
    • Assist the grower in ensuring land preparation & re-establishment (planting and coppice) is according to Sappi’s BOP standards and quality expectations using the RMS; APO (silviculture and harvesting) to achieve Temporary Unplanted targets within budget constraint; lower risk exposure and improve efficiencies.
    • Monitor and manage plant use efficiency by tracking consumption against order including confirmed in field plantings to ensure plants are accounted for and costs within budget and ensure the grower builds appreciation of these principles
    • Assist the grower to develop an integrated maintenance plan using silviculture and harvesting APO; TUP and the previous 3 years plantings ensure maximum plants survival and improved yields at harvest whilst keeping costs within budget
    • Assist the grower to develop a phased harvest plan per compartment using the harvesting APO working with both the grower and the contractor to ensure shared responsibility and guarantee rateable Woodfibre supply to market
    • Conduct a risk assessment per compartment pre- and interim harvesting operation to identify and mitigate potential safety hazards and ensure the grower builds appreciation of these principles
    • Monitor Woodfibre quality and production rates by conducting recorded interim operational inspections to ensure adherence to daily production targets and Mill quality specifications and ensure the grower builds appreciation of these principles
    • Monitor Woodfibre movement by keeping records of in field and depots stocks and reporting regularly to FM to ensure rateable Woodfibre supply to markets as per the different markets needs and ensure the grower builds appreciation of these principles
    • Assist the grower to develop a plantation management plan (PMP) as well as a fire risk management plan to identify risks, record &  implement fire control procedures in order to ensure the effective protection of people, plantation and other assets from forest fires
    • Support the development of service providers’ capacity to ensure skills transfer and supplier development

    What are we looking for?

    • National Diploma in Forestry or related qualification.
    • A Degree in forestry or related qualification would be preferable.
    • Minimum 3 years relevant experience.

    Transport Controller

    • Sappi Forests requires a Transport Controller to track and monitor vehicles on an electronic system, enabling the control of risk and the safety of drivers as well as ensuring client satisfaction through the on-time and in-full delivery of loads.
    • To coordinate and expedite the off-loading of products at delivery points, contributing to the on-time delivery of transportation services and client satisfaction

    This role reports to the Transport Planner

    The main responsibilities of this job are:

    • Execute the daily route plan through live/integrated vehicle tracking for all site vehicles against the plan at an optimal level
    • Raise and escalate trip deviation against a plan to Transport Planner and ensure that all events are governed by tracking procedure
    • Liaise constantly with customers to optimise delivery schedules and lower the transport cost base through the reduction of turnaround times
    • Measure on time delivery and turnaround time and reporting of deviations at a customer level on an hourly, daily, weekly and monthly basis
    • Ensure that vehicle security procedures are followed
    • Submit accurate daily reporting for planner prior to routing session to ensure that returns can be optimally included into the next day’s plan
    • Monitor and control driver behaviour and improve by managing key driver events and escalate to Transport Officer
    • Ensure that the tracking system is accurately maintained to enable management of planned vs. actual routes through the optimisation of customer locations enabling > 96% customer/market order
    • Track all vehicles electronically and ensure that all non-tracked vehicles are explained daily
    • Capture every trip on relevant platforms i.e. Quartex and MixTelematics
    • Re-plan, update, and communicate to relevant stakeholders as trip plans change
    • Update, edit and communicate variations and changes on various platforms i.e Quartex and MixTelematics
    • Handover daily shift and update to all stakeholders
    • Report on detailed variance to the original plan with reasons and action plans
    • Log off communications between stakeholders for every shift

    The ideal candidate should have:

    • Grade 12
    • Diploma in Transport and/or equivalent advantageous
    • Up to 5 years’ experience  
    • Planning experience advantageous
    • Fluent in isiZulu and English
    • MS Office and a good working knowledge of MS Excel
