Main Purpose of the Job

• To install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical equipment and systems used in the processing of steel coils, ensuring optimal performance and minimal downtime. The Millwright is essential to maintaining operational continuity, safety, and product quality in a high-paced, heavy industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities

Installation and Commissioning

• Assemble and install new machinery and mechanical systems used in steel slitting, recoiling, pickling, and galvanizing lines.
• Interpret and work from blueprints, technical drawings, and equipment manuals.

Maintenance and Repairs

• Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on gearboxes, pumps, conveyors, hydraulic presses, cranes, and coil-handling systems.
• Diagnose faults and implement efficient repairs with minimal disruption to operations.

Alignment and Calibration

• Perform shaft and coupling alignments using laser tools or dial indicators.
• Calibrate mechanical equipment as per manufacturer or operational specifications.

Safety and Compliance

• Adhere to all safety procedures including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and permit-to-work systems.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA or equivalent industrial safety regulations.

Collaboration and Reporting

• Work closely with electricians, operators, and engineers to solve complex issues.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, parts used, and time spent.

Emergency Response

• Be available for emergency repairs during breakdowns or unexpected shutdowns, including night shifts and weekends.

Requirements

Education/Qualification & Experience

Education:

• Trade certification or Red Seal as an Industrial Mechanical/Electrical (Millwright) or equivalent.

Experience:

• Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program.
• 3+ years of experience post trade test in a heavy industrial, metalworking, or coil processing environment

preferred.

• Experience with steel slitting lines, uncoilers, mandrels, shears and roller levellers is a strong asset.

Description

• To conduct quality inspection in the production lines and ensure quality of product in accordance with company and operating parameters.

Key Responsibilities:

Adherence to safe work practices and good housekeeping.

• Inspection of work equipment and report machine malfunction.
• Conduct inspection of processed coils from production lines.
• Sampling of raw materials and testing.
• Conduct the verification and calibration of equipment.
• Advise on deviations from standards and defects.
• Perform quality trials and tests.
• Assist in ensuring production of quality product.
• Maintain records and provide reports.
• Technical report writing

Additional/specific work requirements:

• Ensure compliance with the requirements of Safety, Health and Environment Standards and Procedures.
• Maintain a clean, tidy and safe work environment, free of any spillages or obstacles.
• Monitor and adhere to Safal Steel operating standards, working manuals, working instructions and procedures
• Initiate, participate and implement improvement programs and initiatives. This includes developing methods to improve plant performance and reduce operating cost.
• Continuously reporting observed defects and deviations on the operating parameters and production requirements and promptly communicate solutions to the Quality Manager

Requirements

• Grade 12 with technical qualification in engineering or quality.
• Knowledge of quality tools e.g. Ishikawa, RCA, Pareto and SPC.
• General work experience (years): One Year quality experience preferably from a steel manufacturing environment.

Primary purpose of the job

• To control, supervise the operation of the Pickling Line.

Primary Specification/Requirement:

• Ensure Compliance with the requirements of Safety, Health and Environment Standards and Procedures.
• Maintain a clean, tidy and safe work environment, free of any spillages or obstacles. In line with 6S requirements.
• Monitor and adhere to Safal Steel operating standards, working manuals, working instructions and procedures.
• Shop Floor management.
• Ensure safe, efficient and accurate operation of equipment according to operating procedures, QA standards and schedules.
• Prepare shift placement and ensure that the shift team is at all times present in their respective work centers.
• Verify, sign off and ensure timeous submission of compensation related documentation to HR for processing i.e. approved overtime and leave forms.
• Drive on-the-job training and development of manpower based on the defined training matrix and standard operating procedures.
• Identify defects and ensure required quality on the output product.
• Ensure quality and yield are maintained as per norms.
• Inspection of incoming material in order to ensure quality of material on a daily basis.
• Ensure Production Supervisor conduct thorough and accurate handovers to the incoming shift team.
• Monitor process parameters according to operations requirements.
• Perform daily checks comparing actual material consumption to ERP postings, ensuring alignment with approved consumption norms.
• Manage and follow up on the assigned production plan.
• Prioritize work to meet deadlines and immediately report deviations to the Production Manager.
• Cost Control & Material Management.
• Monitor operations to minimize waste and reduce unnecessary consumption.
• Ensure efficient use of materials and monitor material usage to support cost control objectives.
• Ensure optimal manpower utilization and request additional resources when required.
• Updating/Development of SOPs/ WI/ Safety records.
• Communicate with Maintenance in respect of planned and unplanned shutdowns maintenance repairs.

Requirements
Education/Qualification & Experience

• Minimum: Grade12(with Maths & Science)/N3
• NQF4 with Technical skills & Operational qualification
• Steel Industry specific experience in Pickling Line functions (5 Years supervisory experience)

Key Performance Areas

• Efficiently and accurately operate equipment according to operating procedures, instructions, and schedules
• Ensure prime quality production in accordance with quality plan
• Adhere to operating requirements were assigned to.
• Continuously reporting to Production Technician on any observed defects/Deviation, unsafe conditions from the operating parameters or production requirements.
• Ensure compliance with the requirements of Safety, Health and Environmental Standards and Procedures.
• Adhere to safe work practice and good housekeeping (6S)
• Accurate calibration of gauges during start of shift
• Applying appropriate roll bending pressures to avoid pinching as per SOP

Requirements

Education/Qualification & Experience

• Grade 12, with Maths & Science
• Production/ Operations Certificate will add advantage
• Minimum of five (5) years manufacturing experience as an operator
