RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be expected to fulfil the duties of a Lecturer in the Department of Early Childhood Education as described in the minimum requirements. These duties include:

• Curriculum development and lecturing of modules in the programme(s) based in the Department;
• Pursuing research activities such as own research, research-based publications, and the supervision of postgraduate students registered in the Department;
• Developing, presenting, and coordinating undergraduate and postgraduate courses for pre-service and in-service teachers and other students for contact and distance programmes;
• Mentoring students for practice teaching/work-integrated learning;
• Using a learning management system to develop and present courses;
• Presenting lectures and programmes in an E-learning environment;
• Providing a significant contribution to research outputs, postgraduate teaching, and supervision.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:

• Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Curriculum Studies, African Languages, or equivalent degree;
• Current active involvement in research;
• At least one year of teaching experience in Basic Education or Higher Education;
• Evidence of academic administration experience;
• Evidence of some experience in a community, Work-Integrated Learning, or service-learning project related to Education within the last 5 years.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

Lecturer:

• Proven experience in teaching IsiZulu Home Language;

Knowledge of the following:

• South African education system and policy framework on Basic Education;
• Teaching methodologies in isiZulu Home Language.
• Appropriate language and communication skills;
• Ability to apply knowledge and skills in teaching and supervision;
• Ability to work as an individual and in a team.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

Lecturer:

• Proficiency in artificial intelligence systems and digital educational technologies;
• Evidence of involvement in community engagement programmes;
• Knowledge and experience of facilitation in an E-learning environment;
• Experience and expertise in curriculum development for all subjects in Basic Education;
• Knowledge and experience in the application of indigenous knowledge systems in Basic Education;
• Knowledge and experience in the integration of digital technology, especially coding and robotics, in Basic Education;
• PhD in Early Childhood Education in Basic Education, or equivalent degree;
• Current PhD registration in Basic Education Studies or equivalent degree;
• Experience in teaching practice of work-integrated learning;
• Experience in supervising postgraduate students.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Providing and coordinating strategic and administrative support to the office of the Dean;
• Providing strategic and operational management support to the Faculty and the Dean;
• Developing, implementing and monitoring Faculty operational plans in alignment with institutional strategy;
• Managing and overseeing the Faculty operational budget, financial planning, expenditure and reporting;
• Managing faculty administration and operational processes, ensuring efficiency, compliance and continuous improvement;
• Overseeing facilities, infrastructure, maintenance and operational requirements, including coordination of capital projects where applicable;
• Ensuring effective occupational health and safety practices and compliance within the Faculty;
• Leading and coordinating projects and strategic initiatives, ensuring delivery within agreed timelines, budgets and quality standards;
• Developing and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including university management, professional services, staff, students and relevant external partners.
• Providing management information, reports and analysis to support informed decision-making by the Dean and Faculty leadership;
• Ensuring compliance with institutional policies, procedures, governance requirements and relevant legislation;
• Identifying operational risks and implement appropriate risk mitigation and control measures;
• Driving process improvement, service excellence and operational efficiency across the Faculty;
• Supporting the Faculty in achieving its strategic, academic and operational objectives;
• Leading, managing and developing administrative and support staff within the Faculty.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

• A relevant Honours degree (NQF Level 8) in Management, Business Administration, Finance, Human Resources, Public Administration or a related field.
• At least 6 years’ experience in financial and general administration, with 2 years at middle management level in a higher education environment or a comparable complex organisation.
• Demonstrated management responsibility across human resources, finance, facilities and operations.
• Proven experience managing a complex, multi-building campus or large multi-site estate, including facilities, infrastructure, maintenance and capital projects.
• At least 3 years’ experience in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management.
• Proven experience in strategic planning, financial management, stakeholder management and complex project management.
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate and deliver strategic initiatives while managing multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

• Sound general management and leadership capability, including strong people management and change management skills;
• Strategic, analytical and systems-thinking ability, with sound judgement and practical problem-solving skills;

• High level of computer and information literacy;

• Willingness and ability to work outside normal operating hours when required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

• Teaching and practical training of undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary and veterinary nursing students in Equine Surgery;
• Clinical service in the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, surrounding community and satellite clinics, including participation in a 24-hour service;
• Postgraduate training and supervision where appropriate;
• Research and publication in scientific journals;
• Networking with relevant industry stakeholders;
• Community engagement;
• Administrative and other duties as delegated by the Head of Department; and
• Academic self-development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Lecturer:

• A BVSc- or BVMCh-degree or an equivalent veterinary qualification;
• Registration with the SAVC at the time of appointment or eligibility for registration within a reasonable time;
• A MSc-degree in Veterinary science with the research topic related to Equine Surgery; 
• Demonstrable interest in research;
• Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development;
• Participation in extracurricular academic activities or events;
• Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio required at the lecturer level; and
• Demonstrate strong potential to become an established specialist researcher.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

• Proven knowledge and competence in Equine Surgery;
• Research interest appropriate to the position;
• Candidates without a PhD: Commitment to obtain a PhD in reasonable time;
• Good language and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills; and
• Generic teaching competence including proficiency with presentation, word-processing; and spreadsheet software.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

• Experience in various Equine Surgery procedures;
• Tertiary teaching and mentoring experience;
• Exposure to research in an appropriate field; and
• Registration for a MMedVet (Surgery) is desirable.
